No matter where you're coming from, flying can be an enjoyable experience if you're well prepared. We've put together a list of top travel tips that will help get your McCloud escape started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane trip can be a stress-free experience if you pack the right gear. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and lip balm, a spare change of clothes and a good read. Secondly, find room in your bag for your laptop, a charger, your medications and maybe a blow-up neck pillow as well. Lastly, don't forget to bring your passport, travel docs and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Make sure you don't have sharp objects (like a pocket knife) hiding in the bottom of your carry-on luggage. Other restricted items include flammable or explosive goods, such as bleach and fuel, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Your aim is to be as comfortable as possible. Choose a pair of slip-on shoes, dress in loose, natural fibers and remember to bring a sweater in case it gets chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by extended periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to walk around the cabin or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

• Your travel ID and boarding pass will need to be inspected by airport security personnel. Have them close by to avoid fumbling around for them.
• Next up, both you and your carry-on luggage will be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, take off anything that might set the alarms off. Items such as your coat, belt and headphones need to go through the machine.
• All electronic devices, including your phone and laptop, will also need to be scanned.
• Travelling with your favourite cologne? No problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-close bag, you're permitted to bring it with you on board.
• There's a possibility that you'll need to take your shoes off for scanning, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a wise idea.
• Airlines will not allow any sharp or pointed objects in your carry-on baggage. If you must bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked baggage.
