• A plane trip can be a stress-free experience if you've got all the right things. First things first, you'll need basic toiletries, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a fresh change of clothes and a good book. Next, find room in your carry-on bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, any vital medications and perhaps a neck pillow as well. • Double-check that you don't have sharp objects (like a pocket knife) lurking in one of the zippers of your carry-on luggage. Other prohibited items include explosive or flammable products, such as aerosol cans and bleach, and gels and liquids in containers with a volume of more than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• You'll want to go for comfort over style. Prepare for changes in temperature by donning layers, and opt for flat, closed-toe shoes like slip-ons.
• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To reduce your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and do gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat.

Being prepared before you arrive at the airport can make your getaway to Mars a piece of cake. We've compiled some useful tips for a stress-free journey through security:

• First things first. Your travel documents and passport will need to be shown to security personnel. Keep them handy so you don't hold up the queue.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Empty your pockets and remove anything that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.

• Slip-on shoes are a great footwear choice as you're less likely to be asked to remove them when going through security. Boots and other bulky shoes are usually subjected to extra screening.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them safely away in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
