Thousands of colourful wings flap and flutter as birds, both big and small, commonplace and rare, soar majestically in an exhibition of avian awesomeness.
The Pittsburgh National Aviary is the only one in the United States to have achieved 'national' status and is home to over 500 birds representing more than150 different species from across the globe. Its eight intimate, immersive and interactive areas make it a unique and exciting visit for all ages.
Kids will be as happy as larks interacting with all of the birds in the Lories and Friends area. Rainbow lorikeets flock from the foliage for food, creating a collage of colours in the sky as they fly down and land on your arms to take a sip of nectar from your cup – but don't let that ruffle your feathers, these birds are quite gentle and won't cause you any harm. Little Peepers shows let youngsters engage with their feathered friends, but don't let the kids have all the fun those of you who no longer consider yourselves spring chickens can also have great fun feeding the birds.
The Wetlands area is home to birds that are just as much at home in the water as they are in the air. Spoonbills splash about for fish while fabulous pink flamingos balance regally in the water pools. Condor Court features the huge and impressive condor bird with its 3-metre-long wings.
Penguin Point is one of the most popular attractions, giving visitors the opportunity to see playful penguins from all angles. Watch as they dip, dive and torpedo through the cold water.
The aviary is also celebrated for its pioneering work in breeding endangered species. It has successfully seen the birth of the extremely rare Bali Mynah, as well as the more recent births of two African penguins and a Eurasian owlet.
If you're feeling a bit peckish, the Kookaburra Kitchen is the perfect spot for some food before you take off. The National Aviary is located on the North Side of Pittsburgh and is open daily with free parking close by.
