Launceston, the second largest city in Tasmania is the perfect mix of urban city hustle and old country charm. The city is blessed with close proximity to many natural wonders, including the Tamar River, Tamar River Valley, and Cataract Gorge. It is also one of Australia’s oldest cities and boasts beautifully preserved Colonial and Victorian architecture, as well as city parks that its residents have been enjoying for over a hundred years. In Launceston, you can tour historical neighbourhoods, taste cold-weather wines at a charming winery, and spend the afternoon hiking all in the same day!
During your visit, stop by Cataract Gorge, a slice of paradise right in the middle of the city. The gorge is famous for its gorgeous hikes that skirt the gorge. You can also cross the gorge on a suspension bridge, low bridge, or a chairlift to continue your hike to the Trevallyn Dam. In the warm summer, cannon ball into the chilly waters of the gorge and splash the day away. Meanwhile, just outside the city, enjoy the lush beauty and lavender fields of the Tamar Valley, and visit the dozens of wineries on both sides of the river. Here, you’ll get to sip crisp whites that thrive in Launceston’s four-season environment.
Launceston is at its most welcoming in the summer, from December to February, when the temperatures range between 12 and 24 degrees Celsius, and you can spend the day hiking or enjoying the water of the Tamar River or the Cataract Gorge. This is also the time of year when Launceston hosts the majority of its major events and festivals.
The weather is cool between March and May, but the snowfall has usually tapered off. The spring season is a great time to hike and tour some of the city’s attractions.
If you are looking for cheap flights to Launceston and the best deals on accommodation, wait until the winter months of June through August, when Launceston gets cooler and wetter. July is the coldest month when temperatures hover between 2 and 12 degrees Celsius.
Distance: 14.5 km south of city centre
