• Air travel can be a comfortable experience if you take the right stuff. First things first, you'll need toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a spare change of clothes and a good novel. This includes things like tools, metal cutlery, fireworks and fuel. Sporting equipment like bows and arrows, and objects that could harm other people, such as guns and swords, are also banned from the cabin.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your priority when deciding what to wear on your flight. Loose, breathable clothing is a sensible choice, as are roomy, closed-toe shoes.
• Most travellers are aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of inactivity. To reduce your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and keep your legs and feet moving.

• Security personnel first need to make sure that you have a valid ID and matching travel documents before anything else. Have them close by, ready for inspection.
• Your belt, jacket, keys and other small items, like coins, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them before your turn.

• Remember to remove liquids and gels from your carry-on luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each product should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• Lightweight sneakers are a practical footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when passing through security. Big boots and other bulky shoes are often subjected to additional screening.
• Airlines will not allow any sharp items or pocket knives in the cabin. If you must bring these kinds of items, check them in.
