• Air travel can be easy if you take the right things. Firstly, you'll want a few basic toiletries, such as lip balm and hand cream, a clean set of clothes and a good book. Secondly, make room in your bag for your phone and charger, any medications and perhaps a proper neck pillow as well. Lastly, and most importantly, don't forget to bring your passport, travel papers and your credit cards.

• Airport security personnel first need to know that you have a valid passport and travel documents before anything else. Have them ready for inspection.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Remove anything on you that is likely to beep. This includes items like earphones or headphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• For just a few moments, you'll need to unplug from the digital world. Your laptop, phone and any other electronics will also need to be sent through the scanner.
• Don't forget to remove liquids and gels from your carry-on bag. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each item should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
