Escape the city with a visit to this historic property, hidden away in the greenery of Hong Kong park, and steep yourself in the fascinating cultural history of tea.

Hong Kong’s unique blend of British and East Asian culture is neatly encapsulated by the history of tea in the region. Explore the fascinating story behind the world’s most popular drink at the Flagstaff House, a grand reminder of Britain’s long colonial influence in Hong Kong. This remarkable museum is nestled away in the lush greenery of Hong Kong Park, just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Central and Wan Chai.

Survey the museum’s numerous exhibits, which range from Chinese tea production methods to British tea consumption rituals and beyond. Keep an eye out for Tang Dynasty tea wares from the seventh century, and for the more eclectic output of modern ceramic experts. For a more interactive experience, try out the museum’s tea and music pairings or its demonstrations of tea for four seasons. Schedules for these lectures are available online.

The Flagstaff House was built in 1846 in the Greek Revival style that was wildly popular then. The house used to serve as an official residence for the head of British forces in Hong Kong. After sustaining damage during World War II and the Japanese occupation, it was finally restored in 1989. Now its elegant white columns are proudly anachronistic, a vestigial display from the colonial age.

On your way out of the museum, take time to enjoy the surrounding Hong Kong Park. This isle of urban greenery is a wonderful place to relax, and it is host to a range of other landmarks. Stop by the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre in Cassels Block, and look out for wedding parties having their photos taken near the neighbouring marriage registry. Visit the aviary, which boasts nearly 70 species of Southeast Asian birds. Join in the morning ritual of locals at the Tai Chi Garden.

The Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Wares is located on Cotton Tree Drive, inside the park. You can walk there from the Admiralty MTR station. Admission is free and the museum is open every day except Tuesdays and public holidays.
