Explore this town’s enchanting high street for galleries and pubs. Learn about six centuries of the iconic college’s history and its famous alumni.

Across from Windsor on the River Thames, Eton matches its southern counterpart for grace and a place in British culture and history. The quaint town is dominated by the famous Eton College, where Princes Harry and William were educated. Discover highlights of the town with a walk along the river and a guided tour of the school.

Admire the redbrick and Tudor-style buildings flanking the high street, several blocks west of the River Thames. The Eton High Street shopping experience comprises charming art galleries, flower shops, libraries and old pubs. Try the traditional fudge and chocolate and peruse the upmarket fashion stores.

A high street stalwart is the Rhubarb and Custard Photo Gallery. Get your portrait taken professionally or take photography lessons in the workshops of this studio on the campus of Eton College.

Guided tours of the college campus are available on Fridays from May to early September. Follow the docent through the School Yard, Upper and Lower Schools and the marvellous College Chapel. Visit the Eton College Natural History Museum and admire the intricate Burning Bush lantern. Explore this remarkable school’s history in the Museum of Eton Life.

The independent boarding school was founded in 1440 and has educated many of Britain’s most notable figures. Consider the list of writers who graced these halls, including novelist Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and James Bond creator Ian Fleming. Huxley was once a schoolmaster here. Modern stars Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston and Damian Lewis also attended school here.

Eton is located on the northern bank of the River Thames, about 20 miles (30 kilometres) west of London and 7 miles (11 kilometres) west of Heathrow Airport. Take a 20-minute train from Paddington Station in London to Slough, followed by a bus or taxi.

"The location was good and the staff were friendly; the hotel was clean. However, the fact that the metro runs underneath is a major issue for light sleepers, the room was small, and the bed was too short for tall people. I highly doubt I would stay there again. Still, thank you for everything."
