Explore the artworks at a complex of castle ruins, stroll through a triple-naved basilica and relax in a beer garden.

Kaiserswerth is an enchanting riverside district in the northern outskirts of Duesseldorf. This pleasant neighbourhood contains one of the oldest sites in the region to complement its tree-lined avenues, beer gardens and river tours. Spend an afternoon exploring the historical gems and appreciating the picturesque sights.

The highlight of the region is the Kaiserpfalz Kaiserswerth, a set of ruins dating back about 1,000 years. Admire the art sculptures and the range of plant life dotted around this fascinating complex. Take a guided tour to learn the history of these thick walls, which are from the era of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa.

Visit the marketplace at the heart of this neighbourhood for its array of baroque buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Capture photos of your favourite structures and get a sense of the history of this district. The town was an important strategic base for many centuries.

Take a break from the rich tapestry of the past with a few drinks in one of the cafés or riverside beer gardens. These traditional German establishments tend to have long outdoor benches with scenic views of the water and trees. Enjoy warm summer days here with a meal outdoors. Go on a dreamy boat trip from Kaiserswerth to the Old Town area of Duesseldorf.

Continue sightseeing to find the St. Suitbertus Basilica. This Romanesque structure has an impressive interior, with three naves and a baroque gilded shrine containing the relics of the church’s saint.

This district is on the eastern bank of the Rhine River, about 6 miles (10 kilometres) north of central Duesseldorf. Take a bus from the U-Bahn transportation system to arrive in around 20 to 30 minutes. You can also ride a boat along the river for a scenic arrival. Get around this small area on foot or by rental car.

Visit Kaiserswerth for the combination of fascinating historical relics and relaxing leisure activities.
