With over 400 animals representing 40 different species, Crococun Zoo offers a fascinating insight into Mexico's native wildlife, particularly the endangered wildlife of Quintana Roo State where the zoo is situated.
In a former life, Crococun was a commercial crocodile farm. This phase of its existence ended during the brutal hurricane season of 1988 when the farm was all but obliterated. As it was being rebuilt, the decision was taken to convert the farm into a zoological park which would be dedicated to the protection of indigenous endangered species.
These days the resulting zoo is a popular attraction, offering visitors the chance to handle boa constrictors, handfeed spider monkeys and even wander amidst a sea of baby crocodiles. (The adults of the species are kept at a safer distance!)
It is not permitted to explore the zoo without a guide, so the only way to see the place is to take part in one of the guided tours included in every ticket. The tours run all day and lead you through the zoo alongside the many animal enclosures. Guides will also instruct you on the best ways to handle and feed the animals for your safety and theirs.
One other important thing to remember is to bring plenty of water with you on your visit to Crococun, as it can get quite humid in the zoo's jungle environment.
Crococun Zoo is situated within the Riviera Maya, just 31 kilometres from the city of Cancun. The easiest (and cheapest) way to get here is via bus from the city. These depart from the main bus station and drop visitors right in front of the zoo. The zoo is open every day.
