It's a maze of narrow, cobbled streets winding up to the university's impressive Baroque library and chapel. You'll find a mix of traditional shops, Fado houses, and restaurants tucked away in its lanes, with the Sé Velha (Old Cathedral) a prominent landmark.

Couples often enjoy the historic centre for its romantic appeal. Staying here means you're just steps away from the university's historic buildings and can easily explore the botanic garden or catch a Fado performance in the evening. The elevated position also offers lovely views over the city, especially from around the university grounds.

For those who prefer a slightly more open and contemporary feel, the Santa Clara district, on the left bank of the Mondego River, is a good option. It's flatter and offers excellent views back towards the historic centre. Here you'll find modern hotels, riverside walks, and the beautiful Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha.

Families might find Santa Clara more convenient due to its generally wider pavements and easier access to riverside parks for children.
