The Vintage House - Douro

The Vintage House - Douro

10/10 Excellent
"This incredibly beautiful hotel has Douro Valley views from the balcony. I just loved it. The grounds are lovely. It sits on the Douro River, with a short stroll to a great collection of nearby restaurants. The daily breakfast was a delight with a large selection of quality items. My only annoyance was the bathroom mirror. It's limited to a single small circular magnifying mirror. I could use the large desk mirror, though, which gave me additional views of the Douro River. We'll be back!"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Cidadelhe?
The best area to stay in Cidadelhe is within the village itself, particularly around the historic centre.

This area is the heart of Cidadelhe, characterised by its traditional granite architecture, narrow cobbled streets, and the central village square. You'll find the parish church and local amenities within easy walking distance. It's a small, quiet village, making it easy to navigate on foot.

For couples seeking a tranquil escape, staying in the village centre offers direct access to the authentic Portuguese experience. You can enjoy strolls through the historic lanes, discover local crafts, and dine at family-run eateries. The peaceful surroundings are great for unwinding and connecting with the local culture.

Families will also appreciate the village centre for its relaxed pace and the opportunity to experience a traditional rural setting. Children can explore the pedestrian-friendly streets and open spaces, and the proximity to local shops means essentials are always close by.
When is the best time to go to Cidadelhe?
The best time to go to Cidadelhe is typically during late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October).

These months offer pleasant weather, with comfortable temperatures that are ideal for exploring the natural beauty of the region without the intense heat of mid-summer. You'll find the landscape lush and green in late spring, great for hiking and enjoying the Douro River's surroundings. Early autumn brings the grape harvest, a significant event in the Douro Valley, and the vineyards are particularly picturesque with their changing colours.

For those looking to experience the local culture and participate in harvest activities, September is an excellent choice. Many vineyards offer special tours and tastings during this period, providing a unique insight into the winemaking process. It's a particularly good time for couples interested in wine tourism and scenic drives through the terraced hills.

If you prefer a quieter trip with fewer crowds and still excellent weather for outdoor activities, May and early June are ideal. The wildflowers are in bloom, and the river is great for boat trips.
