"This was our third time at this cottage; while Cedar Island is somewhat remote (it's a gorgeous hour-long ride into the main towns), it is a terrific central base for a wide range of day trips. Ocracoke ferry station is at end of street, making for an amazing ride, lunch, beach trip, and walk around the historic village. Tryon Palace is an easy drive on a cloudy day that isn't good for the beach. Cape Lookout is a marvelous trip for shelling and solitude. Beaufort has wonderful restaurants and boat rentals, along with excursion boats. Emerald Isle beaches are excellent. On Cedar Isle itself, there are wild ponies and cows to be seen on the long walkable beach. This is a great location for a couple looking for privacy and a week-long getaway."
