Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Castillo Gaztelu?
The best area to stay when visiting Castillo Gaztelu is in the nearby coastal town of Bakio, or for a slightly different experience, Mundaka.

Bakio is the closest town to Castillo Gaztelu, making it exceptionally convenient for visiting the site. It's a pleasant seaside town known for its long, sandy beach. The main street, Sabino Arana, runs parallel to the coast and holds most of the town's shops, restaurants, and cafes. It's a relaxed place, great for those who appreciate coastal views and easy access to the water.

Couples looking for a relaxing trip will find Bakio ideal. You can enjoy strolls along the beach, explore the local eateries, and easily access Castillo Gaztelu for a day trip. The town itself offers a peaceful base after exploring the castle and its surroundings.

Mundaka, while a little further, offers a distinct character and is particularly well-suited for those interested in surfing or a more traditional Basque fishing village experience. It's famous for its world-class left-hand wave and has a charming old town with narrow streets and a picturesque harbour. The atmosphere here is a bit more active, especially if the surf is up.

For solo travellers, Mundaka offers a great opportunity to engage with the local surf culture or simply enjoy the unique character of a working fishing port.
When is the best time to go to Castillo Gaztelu?
The best time to go to Castillo Gaztelu is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October).

During these months, the weather is pleasantly mild, and the crowds are significantly smaller than in the peak summer months. This allows for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience exploring the castle and its surroundings without the intense heat or the need to navigate through large groups of people. For those who appreciate a relaxed pace and good photo opportunities, these periods are ideal.

Summer (July and August) brings the warmest weather but also the largest crowds, particularly around the popular coastal areas nearby. If you plan to visit in summer, arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon can help you avoid the busiest times.

Winter (November to March) can be cooler and wetter, and some local attractions might have reduced opening hours.
