Quinta Das Lagrimas
5.0 star property
Coimbra
9.2 out of 10, Wonderful, (934 reviews)
"A comfortable room, excellent food both at dinner and breakfast, and an interesting property with lots of history. The legend of Inez and Pedro gave it a unique twist, and the numerous pictures of them by many different artists were displayed throughout the hotel. We also walked through the gardens in the back. They are probably beautiful in the spring and summer, but being October there were just a few plants still in bloom. We enjoyed our stay very much!"

10/10 Excellent
"I don't understand why anyone would give a bad rep of this place. You can see the historic train station (Coimbra-A) from the hotel, in its heyday this place cannot be more convenient. Now, it's also 1 minute away from the Portagem tram stop, which within 10 minutes will put you at the Coimbra bus station, or about 15 minutes from the Coimbra-B train station. They put me on a corner room on the first floor and the kind gentleman working the night shift offered to help me with my suitcase which I GREATLY appreciated. The room was small but had AC, shower was hot with excellent pressure, the bed was comfy and the view just fantastic. Yes, it's small, some light switches don't work, the floor probably could be cleaner and also the bedsheets had a bit too much lint or even hair in it, but this is a BUDGET hotel which is amazingly central in the heart of Coimbra. If you want all that excellence, pay more. You can't pay pennies and ask for too much. I'll take this over a hostel any day. I also thoroughly checked for bugs etc and didn't see any, so you know they do their best in keeping this safe hygienic. I'll recommend this especially to solo budget travellers who want their own room!"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Casal Dos Balaus?
The best area to stay in Casal Dos Balaus is generally within the main village itself, or in the immediate countryside surrounding it, for easy access to its primary attractions.

The main village of Casal Dos Balaus is quite compact, centred around the Rua Principal and the Largo do Adro. Here, you'll find the local church, a few traditional houses, and the village's communal areas. It's a quiet, traditional Portuguese village with a relaxed pace of life.

For couples seeking a peaceful retreat, staying within the village offers a genuine experience of rural Portuguese life. You'll be able to enjoy quiet walks through the village streets and experience local hospitality. Many properties here are converted farmhouses or traditional homes, offering a unique stay.

Families looking for a calm base will also find the village or its immediate vicinity suitable. Being close to the main village means you're never far from essential amenities, and the rural setting provides plenty of space for children to explore in a natural environment.
When is the best time to go to Casal Dos Balaus?
The best time to go to Casal Dos Balaus is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October).

During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm and sunny, making it ideal for exploring the natural beauty of the region without the intense heat of summer. You'll find the countryside lush and green in spring, with wildflowers in bloom, while autumn offers comfortable temperatures and the chance to see the changing colours of the foliage. These periods also tend to be less crowded than the peak summer months, allowing for a more relaxed and authentic experience.

For those looking to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, or exploring the nearby historical sites around Coimbra, spring is particularly good. The mild temperatures are superb for spending extended time outdoors, and the natural landscapes are at their most picturesque.

Early autumn is also excellent for outdoor pursuits and those who appreciate a quieter travel experience. The harvest season can add a local touch to your visit, with opportunities to enjoy regional produce.
