Explore this laid-back town on the shores of scenic False Bay to find family-friendly beaches, surf breaks, beautiful nature reserves and fine local wines.

Taking its name from the Afrikaans word for “beach”, Strand is a charming coastal town at the edge of False Bay, beneath the Hottentots Holland Mountains. Strand began as a fishing village, but has since developed into a scenic holiday destination featuring a long sandy beach, a farmers’ market and proximity to the Helderberg Wine Route.

Explore the town’s 5-kilometre (3-mile) stretch of beaches. Melkbaai, Strand’s most popular beach, is known to be one of South Africa’s safest swimming beaches. The family-friendly beach also offers exciting waterslides at Waterworld Strand. If the ocean is a little chilly, swim in the Olympic-sized swimming pool nearby the Strand Pavilion.

Partake in adventurous sporting activities at Strand, such as surfing. Beginners and experienced surfers can find good breaks along the beach. On Beach Road, find several surf clubs where you can book lessons or hire surf equipment. Explore nearby Lourens River for a day of trout fishing or stretch your legs with a round of golf on Strand’s courses.

The broad promenade along Strand’s beach is perfect for a leisurely afternoon stroll. Grab a spot at one of the waterfront cafés and restaurants and take in views of False Bay over a cool drink. On weekends, the promenade turns into a small marketplace and vendors offer souvenirs and handicrafts. Visit on a Friday to experience the Strand Farmers’ Market, where you can buy local produce such as flowers, confectionary and fresh food.

Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve is ideal for a scenic day trip. Hike along the reserve’s network of walking paths and explore the mountainous landscapes where over 1,300 species of native fynbos plants and approximately 110 bird species thrive. Leisurely trails can be found in the Helderberg Nature Reserve.

Strand is 35-minutes’ drive from Cape Town. If you have a car, explore the Helderberg Wine Route nearby and find over 20 wine estates between Somerset West and Gordon’s Bay.
