“Great place in the heart of Stratford”

It's hard to find a fault with this little B&B. It's a short walk to anything you would want to get to in Stratford including the fabulous Royal Shakespeare Company productions, walks along the river, the various Shakespeare houses, and all the fine restaurants and pubs.(Try Usha for great Indian/Bangladeshi food, open late). We had Room 1 at the back of the house, and it was super quiet. The kingsize bed was very comfortable, and with an opening window we could get the temperature just right for sleeping (cool weather in June). The bathroom was clean and modern with the usual tiny English shower, which worked fine for us. Breakfast is custom ordered ahead of time, a nice touch, with plenty of fruit, yogurt, cereal available as well in a buffet. There's no common area but wifi Internet is available. Parking was out back. Host and hostess couldn't have been nicer. A gem!

Area recommendations

Grove Road, with its string of B&B's, is a perfect area to locate yourself -- just off the main center's streets but still convenient to them. The downtown area is fun to walk around in and quite safe.

Dining

Usha for Bangladeshi food, friendly service, pleasant place. Not expensive. No. 9 Church restaurant gets great reviews but we found it uneven. Garrick Inn is a nice, very old pub.

Family-friendly activities

As to the Shakespeare houses, be sure to visit Shakespeare's birthplace (nice location on a walking street with other old tudor houses and little shops), but go early in the day to avoid the crowds. They let too many people in at once, and you can get trapped in a long line that doesn't move. Hall's Croft is also worth a visit. New Place we found the least interesting. The archaeological dig itself might be interesting for children, and the workers are present and active, but the finds so far are unfortunately not very spectacular. If you have a car, tour around the Cotswolds, to the south of Stratford. Full of charming towns like Stow-in-the-Wold, Chipping Camden, and lots more. Beautiful countryside.

Events and shows

Go to as many Shakespeare performances at RSC as you can! They're great and you might even see a familiar face on stage. Patrick Stewart, for one. We were lucky to see Merchant of Venice, staged as a Las Vegas casino complete with Elvis impersonator. Sounds crazy, but it was great entertainment and very cleverly done.

Outdoors or beach

Take a long walk along the Avon River. You can go down one side, stop to visit the Trinity Church, where Shakespeare was baptized and is buried, then cross the bridge and return on the other side. of the river You can also continue on a bit further from the bridge, where you will see a manually operated lock. Lovely spot, too.
