Named by miners from Sonora Mexico who settled here in 1848, the city of Sonora rests in the Sierra Nevada foothills, in the heart of California’s Gold Country. The city boasts the area’s largest historic downtown district, and hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year. Many of Sonora’s buildings date back to the 1800s, including the restored Opera Hall, built in 1885.
