“Great hotel in convenient - Outstanding breakfast”

The Radisson is located in Canary Wharf. The hotel is located near the River Thames, in the Docklands area. Overall, there is a very serene feel to this place, which is quite impressive given that the city is literally minutes from there by train. The hotel is located near Poplar tube station; however, I would recommend to use the nearby Canary Wharf tube station (much more impressive). There are no notable restaurants immediately nearby, but again, Canary Wharf is a short stroll away and is bustling with many dining/bar venues. The room in itself was very clean, comfortable and quiet. The view was neutral, but you could see the River on the right. I know I wasn't looking for any particular vista, your take might be different. Last but not least: the breakfast was outstanding in quality and diversity of offerings. It was all there from pastries to eggs, toasts, fruits, dairy products, dried fruits all the way to an assortment of smoke fish. We really enjoyed the impeccable service and staff courtesy throughout. I travel a lot in the US and would compare this hotel to a large Resort Sheraton or Hilton. Overall, unbeatable value, highly recommended.

Getting around

Use the Canary Wharf station instead of the Poplar one once you're set in. The latter is too suburban; the former is exceptional in many respects: size, design and surroundings.

“Nice hotel a bit off”

The hotel was good for visiting Canary Wharf for business, only drawback was a little too long walk to get into the business area of Canry Wharf.

Another way to get to Canary Wharf is travelling by Tube which only takes 10 Minutes from the Hotel, which I can recommend many of our Guests choose. “A London Hotel on the Thames”

It depends on why you are in London, as a tourist or non-tourist. We choose to use more the Bus 15 from DLR Blackwall station. It was a good mode of transportation with all the sights (Tower Hill, St. Paul's Cathedral, and Trafalga/ Charing Cross on the way to Piccadly Circle and it was econcomical. I was wary of taking the path from Blackwall to the hotel at night, but we didn't have problems. But there are some questions about the DLR Blackwall and East Indies.

Area recommendations

St. James, Paddington, Parliament Square, South Kensington, Bloomsbury, Soho, Covent Gardens, St. Paul's Cathedral area. They are close to or are the areas of important landmarks (museums, history).

When to go

I have made enough trips abroad to know that if you are staying in a hotel over the holidays be ready for some differences. There is sometimes limited services at tourist sites (Costa Rica over Lenten Week and Sundays). London was one site that museums were open but maybe for fewer hours. Restaurant choices maybe less, as in Madrid on Sundays; although in Seville there were a number of bars and restaurants Christmas Day. Transportation is limited in most of Britain, France, Spain, and Italy on Sundays.

Getting around

If in a hurry, use the metro or bus, but remember rush hours. I prefer the bus anywhere in Europe. Whether in town or out of town, a bus allows you see the country better than by train or metro (subway). Bus aren't always between big towns. I have come across some very interesting smaller towns in Spain and England. Although there is something to be said about car travel. Transportation is limited in most of Britain, France, Spain, and Italy on Sundays. I would recommend to check online about bus/metros(subways)/ trains to see what their hours and what lines will be accessible. In fact, one could check every day or every other day to see if work is being done on the lines, particularly on weekends.

What to pack

Pack light. Think about how many ways you can use a piece of clothing. Remember you are a tourist. No one expects you to dress in your finery of high heels (remember many streets are cobble stone and uneven) and tie to go to dinner. I would avoid blue jeans or shorts (even if it is summer). Shorts are for the beach. If there is a chance, place a scarf for the women and a tie for the men in the suitcase. Make sure that your shoes are comfortable before you go. Many hotels provide a few essential bathroom needs. But it great to be able to shop for what you need there. Makes you feel like a resident of the city/country. The products are as good as in the U.S. Side note: Wear what is comfortable for a car trip on the plane. Remember also be prepared to remove shoes. I have seen people stand in line at security trying to balance against the security table and take off high boots. It doesn't look very dignified. Use a suitcase on rotating wheels to make sharp corner turns. Be very careful with carryon's size. I am like most tourists try to carry overflow from a checked suitcase or to avoid checking a suitcase, use only carry on luggage. But there are a lot of us out there trying to do the same. thing. If any part of your plane travel is on commuter plane, you may still need to check at the gate your bag if they determine that it won't fit in the overhead compartment.

Must see

In London, Buckingham Palace, Parliament Square, Westminister Abbey (audio tour), Whitehall (street with 10 Downing Street), Parliament (enter and view), Churchill Museum and World War II center (behind Treasury for audio tour), Trafalga Square, British National Gallery (high tea in restaurant), St. Martin's in the Field (free noon-time musical recital), British National Museum (great collection), British Library (great for musical, literary, and political advances), St. Paul's Cathedral, London Museum (great exhibits of history of London), Tower Hill, Tower Bridge, Tate Britain (British artists), Victoria and Albert Museum (great art work), British Science Museum (1st floor good), and the Thames River from behind Parliament (a park with benches. Of course, there's the London Eye and Boroughs Market also on South Bank, like Globe Theatre (worth seeing performace there) and Tate Modern Museum (if you like modern art, but a great view of North Bank of Thames from 7th floor)
