Unique Sleeps: Mayfair Hotel, Adelaide, South Australia
Unique Sleeps: Amazing hotels hand picked by Expedia Experts. The Mayfair Hotel, Adelaide, South Australia.
There’s something abut a hotel harvesting its own honey that pulls on my heartstrings. Like sitting down to breakfast in a humble country cottage in a bygone era, homemade honey represents a commitment to the environment, to the community and to a really good breakfast! The Mayfair’s buffet breakfast, served in the Mayflower Restaurant, comes with its own honey table. A pot of freshly prepared “Mayfair Rooftop Bees” honey and a big slab of honeycomb take pride of place. Drizzled on bit sized muffins and fresh bread, it’s a good introduction to Adelaide, and South Australia’s bountiful produce.
The Mayfair opened last year and is Adelaide’s newest luxury five star hotel, located smack bang in the heart of town on the corner of King William Street and the edge of Rundle Mall. The building has been lovingly restored to its former glory, using locally sourced materials and an aesthetic that’s chic and stylish.
Beyond the bees, there’s another rooftop resident generating a lot of buzz. The Mayfair’s rooftop bar Hennessy is named after the building’s first architects and is the place to see and be seen in Adelaide. Tucked into the vaulted roof, and reaching out to a terrace looking out over the city, the bar is a beauty, with customer marble bar top, chandeliers, art deco tiles and a serious wine list filled with local heavyweights. Order a Barossa red and look out over the gargoyles to the city as the sun sets.
You won’t want to leave but from here you’re on the doorstep of Adelaide’s up and coming small bar scene. Gin and tonic specialists Hains & Co is just around the corner, serving local and rare gins, while Pink Moon Saloon just a few more streets away is a cute Nordic-esque cabin that’s worth popping in to for a nightcap or two.
