Top 5 reasons why you NEED to visit Fiji
There are not many of us who wouldn’t jump at the chance to lap up blue skies, white sands and crystal clear waters, but what if your paradise needs more than just beach days? The good news is, whatever your paradise looks like, you’ll find it in Fiji.
Just in case we need to twist your arm, here are five reasons why Fiji should be at the top of your travel list:
1. A hop, skip and a jump
So the saying goes, and it’s never been more true than when it comes to a trip to Fiji. The archipelago of islands is under four hours flight from Sydney. That’s less time in a plane than it takes to visit Western Australia. Within a day you can go from sitting Sydney traffic to sipping cocktails at a swim up bar in paradise. Direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide make this one easy spot to get too.

2. Loved up and loving it
This really is the most romantic destination on Earth. The Married at First Sight contestants certainly seem to think so! Woo your special someone with an adults only retreat at Tokoriki Island Resort, this award winning property takes laid back luxury to the next level with everything from candlelit beach dinners to a decadent day spa. Hop on a sunset cruise, watching the sun sink below the horizon from the deck of your Captain Cook boat, while dining on a BBQ of lobster tails and scotch fillet. Or go all out and celebrate your wedding on the beach with the sand between your toes. No wedding or honeymoon plans on the horizon? Sometimes it’s the simple things that matter the most. A long walk ending with a delicious picnic on your own private beach never goes astray, or watch sunset over Port Denarau from Rhum Bar. Well known to have the best pina coladas in Fiji, the bar infuses their own vanilla, chilli honey and coconut rum, and is a great spot for a few drinks at the end of the day.

3. Fun for little and big kids
Got the family in tow? Fiji is renowned for its family friendly attitude – and has plenty of activities that make it perfect for family getaways. We’re not just talking about kids clubs – although a lot of the hotels have these amazing facilities. At Castaway Island your little ones will learn how to husk coconuts, play lali drums, make kava bowls and learn traditional Fijian dances. Then there’s the nannies, known as Meimeis, who are available at most resorts to pop in and look after your kids while you escape for a romantic evening or even a day out. Want to maximize quality family time? If you’re staying on the mainland, the Malamala Beach Club is a great day out for everyone. Kids under two are free at the world’s first island beach club.

4. Meet the locals
If you want to add some extra special, meaningful moments to your trip make the effort to meet the locals. Known as the happiest people on Earth, the Fijians are always happy to say hello, and love to showcase their local customs. A Nadi half day tour gives you a taste of local life. You’ll tour the historic town of Viseisi, learning more about traditional ceremonies and handicrafts, before heading to a sprawling garden home to more than 2,000 different varieties of orchids, before finishing up with a stop at the beautiful Sri Siva Subrahmaniya Swami Temple. At Robert Crusoe Island Resort, you’ll get to learn even more about local life – the small island is a short lagoon ride from the mainland but keeps the focus on organic, local food cooked lovo, wrapped in banana leaves and buried under hot rocks to cook.

5. Go beyond the beach
Fiji has much more to offer beyond the fly and flop getaway (although we know they do this very, very well). Adrenalin junkies will love some of the more extreme activities – from swimming with manta rays to shark diving, then there’s game fishing and surfing the famous Cloud 9 break. And that’s just the ocean-based activities. On land you’ve got all sorts of options including quad biking, caving, ziplining and some very special hikes to keep you busy. At Barefoot Manta Island you’ll throw off your shoes when you check in and never need them again, just as the name suggests. This casual resort on Drawaga Island is a favourite among those who want to explore excellent reefs on the resort’s doorstep, there’s even shipwreck diving on offer.
