Listopedia: the Tennis Resorts around the World
There’s nothing like a grand slam to get you itching to pick up a tennis racquet. You can’t walk out on the clay courts of the French Open or play the well trimmed lawns of Wimbledon but there’s plenty of courts around the world where you can hit a few across the net. Here’s our Listopedia of the best tennis resorts around the world.
Hamilton Island, Australia
Even if you’re off your game, a tennis match in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef is something special. You don’t even need to pack your racquet along with your snorkel in your suitcase. The Hamilton Island Sports Club provides balls and racquets. Court hire is free for guests staying at several of the hotels on the island, including the Reef View Hotel. Social tennis matches are organised by the Club, along with professional coaching.
Cromlix, Dunblane, Scotland
You won’t get much closer to rubbing shoulders with the tennis champions than at Andy Murray’s very own hotel. The small, luxury property sits outside of the town where Murray grew up and where he was recently married. As you’d expect, there is a tennis court and tennis practice wall on the property, with professional coaching available, but it won’t be Murray fixing up your serve. There’s also archery, fishing, falconry and snooker on site.
La Quinta Resort & Club, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, Palm Springs America
With the Santa Rosa mountains in the background and a tennis court fringed by Palm Trees, this resort is classic Palm Springs. Celebrities like to sequester themselves in this very private resort – especially the tennis pros when they’re in town for the BNP Paribas Open. Brush up on your backhand with former champion player Tom Gorman, who runs a year-round weekend clinic program with his USPTA-certified professional team.
St Regis Bahia Beach Resort, Puerto Rico
Working up a sweat on the courts of this luxury five star hotel is well rewarded – court side lounge chairs, sweat towels and drinks are just all part of the St Regis service. There are four deco turf hard courts to choose from – two are floodlit for night tennis if you’re keen to play when the temperature gets cooler. Tucked into a coconut planation right by the beach, the resort is a good option if not everyone in the family is keen to spend their time at the courts. Pools, beach, spa, kids club and an 18-hole golf course can provide a few other distractions.
Topnotch Resort & Spa, Vermont, America
Tucked into the ski fields of Vermont, this sprawling estate is well known for its world-class tennis coaching program. The Tennis Academy operates year round, with more than 30 different programs taking place on the six outdoor courts and four indoor courts. Whether you’re after video analysis of your swing or just a good match in the fresh mountain air, this resort caters for just about everything. And everyone. Kids as young as five can sign up for mini academies, with the Topnotch Tennis Academy popular with all ages.
One&Only Le Saint Geran, Mauritius
Keen to hit the tennis courts but don’t want to miss out making the most of your tropical holiday? This luxury property in the Mauritius has the best of both worlds, with seaside tennis courts looking straight out at the lagoon. The five synthetic grass courts are flood lit at night time if you don’t care about the view. The resort hosts weekly doubles tournaments but if you’re not up for a tournament just yet, there’s also complementary 30 minute classes for adults and children during the week.
Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara, Abu Dhabi
Most visitors to the United Arab Emirates wouldn’t expect to play a game of tennis out in the heat of the desert. They probably wouldn’t expect to find this small island oasis just off the coast of Abu Dhabi either. Tennis is just one of the activities on offer. Keep your skills sharp on the floodlit courts, then head out mountain biking, kayaking, try archery, take a wildlife safari drive, or check out the Sir Bani Yas stables.
