Holidays with Teenagers in Hong Kong
Looking to make some lasting memories with the kids before they outgrow family holidays? Hong Kong is a reasonably short international flight from Australia and offers loads of great opportunities perfect for a week-long family holiday with teenagers.
Day 1
It’s your first day in a new and exciting city, so the best way to get acquainted with your surrounds without the day ending in arguments and tears is to book your family onto a tour. The TramOramic Tour offers insight into Hong Kong’s history and daily life aboard an elegant 1920s’ style tram (the staff are even in historical costumes) with an open-air top deck. There’s free Wi-Fi, on board videos and a picture gallery that compares past and present to learn more. As a bonus, included in the ticket is a two-day pass for unlimited free transport on the Tramways’ regular service and thematic journey maps for self-guided tours.
Day 2
You’ve started exploring Hong Kong by tram, but now it’s time to venture out on foot. Get your bearings while learning a little about the exciting local culture with Little Adventures. These cultural walks are perfect for holidays for teenagers – all tours are very hands on and immersive, so they’re guaranteed to impress even the most nonchalant of teenagers! The expert tour guides are all top local food bloggers, journalists, or even a young Cordon Bleu chef, and they’re all social media savvy and can help with those all-important Instagram moments.
Day 3
Crossing Victoria Harbour by The Star Ferry is one of Hong Kong’s star attractions. This iconic body of water connects Hong Kong Island with Kowloon, which lies opposite. Head to Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier or the Central Pier 7 to purchase your ticket on the day you wish to travel. No bookings are taken, the ferry runs on a first-come, first-serve basis. It’s a hit for holidays with teenagers, who can run amok while you enjoy a cup of coffee out on the deck.
Once you’re on the Kowloon-side of Victoria Harbour, you’ll find it hard to drag your teens out of the Harbour City shopping mall. With over 450 high street shops it’s a teen dream and perfect for whiling away a few hours. Just make sure you’ve got plenty of extra space in your luggage – Hong Kong’s shopping is legendary.
Day 4
By now you’ve probably noticed that you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to cuisine on a holiday with teenagers in Hong Kong. With everything from tasty street food, to addictive dim sum and opulent Michelin-starred restaurants, the real difficulty comes from having to choose which delicacy you’ll try next. Enter Eating Adventures Food Tours! A teenager’s appetite is rarely suppressed, so luckily these tours offer up to seven specially selected tastings while wandering through local neighbourhoods and markets. The local guides guarantee you’ll experience the real Hong Kong with your teenage family and taste authentic Cantonese cuisine.
Once your lunch has settled, it’s time to soar above the city at the sky100 Hong Kong Observation Deck. Otherwise known as the “Oasis in the City”, sky100 gives you the chance to rise 100 stories above the frantic pace of city life for breathtaking views of the harbour and city. If you can’t decide whether you’d rather see Hong Kong best by day or night, your best bet is to buy a Sun & Stars Ticket which allows you to return within a 30-day period with a 40% discount off the total price.
Day 5
Looking to spoil your teenager a bit on your holiday? Hong Kong Yachting’s flagship boats Jungle Jane and Tarzan come complete with an inflatable slide and twister lounge, king sun bed, bean bags and sound system making for the ultimate floating paradise for families with teenagers. Hong Kong is made up of hundreds of islands and beaches and water sports are all the rage. Try to time your visit with one of the three annual harbour fireworks displays – Jungle Jane and Tarzan offer the best view points away from the crowds!
