Gothenburg

This Swedish city showcases some of the best of aspects of Europe with its wide streets, rich history, delicious seafood and range of entertainment, from museums to nightlife.

Discover the delights of an easy-going city exploring the cobblestone streets of Gothenburg. This port city was designed and fortified by Dutch immigrants in 1621 and its canals and wooden houses hold a resemblance to Amsterdam. Dutch heritage isn’t the only influence, with Parisian-like thoroughfares crisscrossing the city. Gothenburg’s parks, culture and exciting nightlife have earned it the nickname “Little London” among locals.

Get to Gothenburg in western Sweden by ferry from Denmark or by canal from the Swedish capital, Stockholm. Once here use public trams, hire a bike or take taxis to get around quickly. Avoid driving, as parking spaces around the city centre are limited and can be expensive. Purchase a cost-efficient Gothenburg City Card, which provides free public transportation, some free parking and admission to many attractions.

Begin sightseeing at Gustav Adolf’s Square where you’ll find the Kronhuset. Nearby, engage with Gothenburg’s history at the 18th-century City Museum (Stadsmuseum).

Visit the port and discover Sweden’s long seafaring history at the Maritime Museum. While here, enjoy the sights and sounds of the Fish Market (Feskekôrka) where you can sample fresh oysters and seafood sandwiches.

Gothenburg’s famous Poseidon Statue stands at the start of Avenyn, the city’s main boulevard, in the Götaplatsen square. These lively districts are known for art galleries, shopping and nightlife.

Visit Gothenburg in the December festive season to see the snow-covered city adorned with decorations and to experience the charming Christmas markets.

Though winter days are cold and dark, short summers provide long daylight hours. In June and August, dine in alfresco restaurants and enjoy cruises that operate on the Göta Canal. Visit Slottsskogen city park’s free zoo, where you’ll see penguins and seals among the many animals. Children will love the rides in Liseburg Amusement Park.

Take a daytrip and drive to the ruins of Bohus Fortress in nearby Kungälv, where there are centuries-old buildings and medieval festivals. With a hire car you can use Gothenburg as a base to explore the rest of Sweden’s beautiful west coast.
