Marbella

Historic charm and modern luxury make this idyllic resort town a favourite port of call for celebrity jet-setters.

Marbella is the jewel in the crown of the Spanish Riviera. Visit this gorgeous resort town for a beach holiday steeped in local history, and see for yourself why Marbella is the destination of choice for stars such as Sean Connery and Antonio Banderas.

The Old Town (Casco Historico) of Marbella offers a glimpse into the long and varied history of the Andalusia region. Keep your eyes out for landmarks from the different civilisations that have settled here over time: Roman baths, Moorish structures, early Christian churches and more. Rest weary legs by the fountain in Alameda Park and look around the square’s historic mosaics. For a real indulgence, order tapas and watch traditional Spanish dancing there as well.

Stop by the Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo to see works by local boy Pablo Picasso. Stroll down the Avenida del Mar, taking time to appreciate the Salvador Dalí sculptures along the way. Marbella is also home to many fine festivals, so consult the town’s festive schedule in advance or at the tourist office.

At the heart of the fabulous Costa del Sol, Marbella is home to a beautiful stretch of Mediterranean coastline. Take a swim, laze about on the beach or stroll along Marbella’s boardwalk, the Paseo Maritimo.

Marbella has just around 140,000 permanent residents, but nearly 1 million people come to visit every year. Celebrities and jet-setters have been regulars in town since the 1970s, and the super-rich today can be found mingling and relaxing out on the Golden Mile.

The climate in Marbella is mild, and the weather is hottest between June and August. Use buses and licensed, metered taxis to get around town. If you bring a rental car, be warned that parking can be expensive. Marbella is around 40 minutes drive from the Málaga airport.
