Experience a fascinating mixture of cultures in Fiji’s capital city, Suva. The city lies on the southeast coast of Viti Levu and is framed by lush green mountain ranges. Although much of Fiji’s appeal lies in its tropical island beaches, many visitors head to Suva to appreciate the city’s intriguing multicultural attractions.
Suva is home to Chinese, European, Indian and Polynesian cultures, and displays a lively range of traditions, cuisines and religions. Learn about Fiji’s indigenous history and its fusion with this mix of cultures at the Fiji Museum. The museum showcases artefacts from Fiji’s islands, including musical instruments, weapons, cooking utensils and jewellery. At the Indo-Fijian Gallery, find artworks by several significant Fijian artists. Stop by the Thurston Gardens to see a beautiful botanical display, including native flora, rolling lawns and tall fig trees.
Victoria Parade is a charming street filled with the city’s notable colonial buildings, such as the Old Town Hall, the Grand Pacific Hotel and early-20th-century government offices. Continue your stroll to Sukuna Park to enjoy fantastic mountain and ocean views. This park was named after Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, who founded independent Fiji. Grab a souvenir from the handicrafts market to the north of the park, such as traditional “Cannibal Isles” wooden cutlery sets.
Wander through the winding streets that flank Nabukalou Creek to find Suva’s commercial heart and a lively district with bars, restaurants, shops, churches and temples. Sample some different fruits, vegetables and spices at Suva Municipal Market. See religious monuments at the Shree Laxminarayan Temple and the old cathedral.
Seek respite from the warm Fijian sun at Colo-i-Suva Forest Park. Hike along trails through the cool rainforest to waterfalls and swimming holes. If the weather turns to a tropical downpour, take shelter under the leafy canopy.
Despite the country’s reputation for friendliness, poverty and crime make Suva less safe than other areas in Fiji. Stay in the tourist areas when possible and avoid walking at night.
Suva is less than 3 hours by ca from Nadi via the coastal Queens Road. Buses operate between the two cities. Suva’s cruise terminal is a busy gateway for travellers visiting for a short stopover.
