The streets of Yangon, particularly near Botataung Pagoda, show a fascinating collision of local traditions, colonial history and modern advancement
This building was originally the Government Press building which was built in 1912. It served as a distribution point for official documents sent from India - remember the British were in control during that time. We loved the colonial style building and that it is still being used by the Ministry of Information.
Botahtaung Pagoda as the sun went down. I am not sure what the entrance fee for foreigners is but the huge sign is slightly obnoxious, isn't it?! The Pagoda is very close to some piers which are quite fun to explore. After seeing many other pagodas in the city, we opted out of paying to see another one.
This gothic style church is absolutely gorgeous and was completed sometime between 1899-1910. It is easy to see the church from around the city because of the iconic steeples. The architecute, detail work, stained glass, and reliefs inside the church are truly works of art. A must see church in Yangon. Women must wear long pants or skirt to enter. Visitor hours are between 2-5pm and sometime in the morning on days there are not services. Entrance is free
The Ministers Office building is gorgeous despite the decay. We walked around the large city-block size complex to see if we could get inside to no avail. This building is on a huge area of land and is strictly closed with gates, lock, and key. I would recommend you walk around it anyway because you get to see a lot of other colonial style buildings as well. Another great example of Bristish architecture in Yangon!

Sarkies Bar in Yangon at the Strand Hotel. This hotel has been open since 1901. We went there and Had a delicious high tea with champagne followed by a cheese and bread platter. We enjoyed it so much we finished off with a couple of $7 cocktails.
