Haggerlythe is situated on one of the most desirable and most photographed streets in Whitby, as this charming area has changed very little over the years. It has such a fascinating history and there are many tales and legends to discover. Henrietta Street leads from Tate Hill beach up to the 199 Steps, which take you to the iconic Abbey which watches over the town from up on the cliff top. You will be following in the footsteps of Vikings, monks, smugglers, captains and even Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Haggerlythe is named after the streets original name back in 1270AD, before it was changed to Henrietta Street. The town itself was named Whitby by the Vikings who arrived on raids.
The cottage is in keeping with its heritage, as it is a traditional fisherman’s cottage with many original features. Step off the cobbles and down a little side street to discover the private enclosed yard. From here you will hear the bells of St Mary’s Church which you can see perched up on the cliffs above. There is a seating area so that you can enjoy meals outside whilst listening to the seagulls.
Step through into the well-equipped kitchen with its beamed ceiling evoking the past, there are many quirky features to this property, giving it character and charm. The living room boasts a wood burner, perfect for warming up after a winter’s walk watching the crashing waves. There is comfortable seating for the whole family and a dining table for meals or games. Up the winding stairs there is a modern shower room, maximising the space, with the added benefit of a heated floor. There are three bedrooms, a four-poster double and a single on the first floor, and an attic twin bedroom with views over the rooftops.
Whitby is the perfect destination for anyone looking to explore the Yorkshire coast. There are some wonderful hiking trails where you can discover nearby beauty spots, the Cleveland Way along the cliff tops and the Cinder Track from Whitby to Scarborough are some of the most popular routes. There are also regular buses or even the steam train in the summer to visit destinations across the North Yorkshire Moors, as well as coastal villages such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes.
For dogs, you have a choice of beaches which they are sure to love, as well as forests such as Dalby and Falling Foss. You can also wander over the rolling heather-clad moors, up to peaks such as Roseberry Topping or down into the Hole of Horcum. In the town itself there are many dog friendly pubs and cafés, and even a dog bakery!
Children will enjoy playing on the golden sandy beach stretching all the way to Sandsend. There are also the arcades, a surf school, a great outdoor play area at Pannet Park and an outdoor paddling pool, perfect for riding inflatables or water fights. Further afield there is Scarborough, with its Sea Life Centre and Alpramare waterpark. The theme park and zoo, Flamingo Land, is around 40 minutes away. No matter your age you are sure to love a locally made ice cream or a freshly caught fish with chips as you have a stroll along the pier. A perfect holiday for everyone! Beach ¼ mile. Shop and restaurant 110 yards, pub ¼ mile.

Really disappointing
The location was excellent but as we arrived and walked into the back yard we were unimpressed with the overall state of it. There was rubbish left out and rusty parts of the yard left on the table. Parts of the kitchen were also in the yard. We walked into a reasonably clean kitchen and living space but cupboards were dirty, there was someone’s washing in the washing machine and the fridge shelf was broken. We had to mop and hoover the whole place when we saw the state of our 11month old grandson who had been crawling on the living room floor. Old fruit had been left in the fruit bowl and toys were left in the floor of the living room and in random baskets. The bathrooms, towels and bedding were clean but the rest of the house was not. Wallpaper was ripped off walls, cobwebs were in every room and the ironing board was so dirty it was unuseable. When we arrived, the heating did not work and we had to figure out how to restart the boiler because the pressure had dropped. That took a few attempts and after 2 days it went off again. The house was so cold and the lack of hot water meant that our daughter, her husband and our grandson had to leave. We called the company and after a very long wait on the phone, we got through and a technician arrived within 20 minutes and restarted the boiler. On the 5th day, after all this, the house flooded and we had to leave. We were offered a relocation but we left and therefore missed our friends’ son’s 30th birthday celebration!

Whitby
A lovely little house - with many original features. We loved the street it was on which led straight to the harbour and although you have to hold your nerve driving a car through the narrow streets to get to it, but is worth it! (Parking was not a problem - we parked on the main harbour street for free with a ten minute walk to the house after unloading). We could walk everywhere. The steps to the abbey are just 1 minute away and the we walked to robin hood's bay from the house. A 7mile trip and getting the bus back. totally recommend! Exploring Whitby was fun, also from the house and many places to eat and drink on the doorstep. We loved the sitting room and the kitchen is a great size. The under floor heating in the bathroom was wonderful! A very happy time.

We loved the cottage and location. Had an issue finding the key box but once we located it and got into the property all was fine. Kitchen well equipped and the owner left some tea bags Sugar etc. Plenty of towels and cottage was very cosy. Parking is a bit of an issue but wouldn't stop us going again.
