West Edmonton Mall is more like a covered city than a conventional shopping arcade. Covering around 500,000 square metres, it is the largest indoor shopping centre in North America, and among the top 10 in the world. In addition to over 800 retail outlets, there is more family entertainment than you could ever wish for, with amusement parks, an ice rink and even a zoo, all enclosed under the glass domed roof.
Amongst the many shops and boutiques, you’ll discover a taste of global culture. The shopping centre features three themed areas modelled on Asia, old-world Europe and New Orleans. Head to Chinatown to explore the traditional Chinese market set amongst beautiful far-eastern décor. You’ll do a double-take as you wander along Europa Boulevard the elegant stone façades recreate a quintessential Parisian street, complete with high-end boutiques and pavement cafés. When it’s time to let your hair down, Bourbon Street’s vibrant bars and restaurants are the perfect place to enjoy a sizzling steak, washed down with a classic cocktail.
One you’ve had your fill of retail therapy, it’s time for adventure! Galaxyland, the shopping centre’s signature amusement park, has exhilarating rides for all ages. Adrenaline junkies will love Mindbender, the world’s largest indoor triple loop rollercoaster, or Space Shot, which launches passengers over 35 metres into the air. Apart from the seven thrill rides, there are also seventeen other rides and attractions that are perfect for younger children.
The whole family will love the World Waterpark, boasting the world’s largest indoor wave pool and many twisting and turning waterslides. Alternatively, you can glide across the ice at the National Hockey League-sized Ice Palace Rink.
Don’t forget to say hello to Cara, Kelpie and Pablo, the three trained sea lions at Sea Life Caverns. The underground aquarium is home to sharks, sea turtles and penguins, as well as shoals of colourful fish.
West Edmonton Mall is a 25-minute drive from downtown Edmonton, and offers parking for more than 20,000 vehicles. It is also accessible by bus and rail. It is open Monday to Saturday until 9 pm, and until 6 pm on Sundays.
