The best area to stay in Vrij is the historic city centre, particularly around Markt Square and the surrounding streets.

This neighbourhood is the heart of Vrij, characterised by its well-preserved medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Markt Square, the main plaza, is a lively focal point, often hosting markets and events, and is surrounded by cafes and restaurants. From here, you're within easy walking distance of most of Vrij's key attractions, including the Vrij Cathedral and the Vrij Museum.

Couples will find the city centre particularly appealing for a romantic getaway. The area offers a delightful setting for strolls, with many boutique hotels located in historic buildings. You can enjoy candlelit dinners at establishments overlooking the canals or explore the numerous art galleries and independent shops.

For solo travellers looking for convenience and a pleasant base for exploration, the area just south of Markt Square, near the train station, is an excellent choice.

The best time to visit Vrij is during the spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities and the region's natural beauty is at its peak.

Spring in Vrij sees the countryside burst into bloom, particularly with the fruit orchards that Limburg is famous for. Temperatures are mild, making it ideal for cycling and walking along the many trails that crisscross the region, such as those through the undulating hills of the Limburgse Heuvels. It's a fantastic time for couples who enjoy scenic rides or peaceful strolls through blossoming landscapes.

Early autumn offers similarly comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds than the peak summer months. The landscape transforms with rich autumnal colours, especially in the forests around towns like Valkenburg.
