Recline on the sands of this secluded beach and keep watch for sea lions playing in the water and fishing boats returning to the bay’s jetty with the daily catch.

When it comes to stunning beaches, it’s difficult to find a rival for Vivonne Bay. Clear waters, jaw-dropping scenery and idyllic isolation give the beach top marks. Stroll along soft white sands that sweep around the bay in a dramatic arch or look out to sea from the jetty that extends into the water from ruggedly beautiful Point Ellen. Check out pristine conservation parks or experience a high-octane adventure on Kangaroo Island’s only sand dunes.

Get acquainted with Vivonne Bay’s gorgeous beach views from the small township that hugs the waterfront near the mouth of the Harriet River. Grab your towel and set out for the beach. You’ll find plenty of space to relax and enjoy the ocean panorama. Go for a refreshing swim in the Southern Ocean or wax up your surfboard if the swell is pumping. Kids can play in the shallow estuary waters near the river mouth.

You might see anglers fishing in the waves with large surf rods. Fishing boats regularly drop off the daily catch of crayfish at the jetty on the bay’s southern headland. Visit the jetty for fantastic views back across the bay or bring a picnic to enjoy at the jetty picnic shelters. There are also barbecues available, so you can grill up a meal of fresh Kangaroo Island seafood.

The Vivonne Bay Conservation Park protects the southwestern part of the bay, while the east belongs to the Seal Bay Conservation ParkOpens in a new window. See some of the residents of the country’s third-largest sea lion colony here. Don’t miss a visit to Little Sahara, an area of sand dunes near the bay. Go hiking, quad biking, tobogganing or sand boarding on the dunes.

Vivonne Bay is located on Kangaroo Island’s rugged southern coast. It is an hour’s drive southwest from Kingscote or a 90-minute drive west from Penneshaw’s ferry terminal. Choose from a range of inns and vacation cottages in the town if you wish to stay overnight in beautiful Vivonne Bay.
