Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go to Van Dyks Bay?
The best time to visit Van Dyks Bay is during the whale watching season, which typically runs from June to December.

This period offers the highest chance of spotting Southern Right Whales directly from the shore or on boat trips. The weather during these months is generally mild, with cooler temperatures in winter (June-August) and warmer, drier conditions in spring and early summer (September-December). This makes it ideal for outdoor activities and enjoying the coastal scenery.

For couples seeking a romantic and memorable getaway, visiting between September and November is particularly good. The whales are still plentiful, but the weather is usually more agreeable for strolls along the coast and enjoying sundowners with ocean views. Many accommodations offer cosy fireplaces for cooler evenings.

Families travelling with children will also find the June to December window excellent. The excitement of whale watching appeals to all ages, and many local operators offer family-friendly boat excursions.
