Tower Hill Nature Reserve
To see an arial drone video of Tower Hill House and the surrounding nature reserve, please click on the link on the homepage.
Though you can drive through, there is direct access to the reserve from our garden. The Tower Hill Nature Reserve is nestled inside an extinct volcano and is a beautiful haven for all sorts of wildlife.
Tower Hill is also great for bushwalking and picnics (BBQs and facilities provided). Guided day or night tours can be booked at the Tower Hill Natural History Centre (T ), which is open daily.
Tower Hill was created some 25,000 years ago in a violent volcanic eruption. The force of the blast created a funnel shaped crater, which was later filled by a lake and island.
On a walk you could well see possums, echidnas, cape barren geese and wedge-tailed eagles (Australia's largest bird of prey). Keen twitchers might also spot chestnut teal, musk duck and spoonbills from the boardwalks and bird hide. Eagles often soar at dusk.
There are numerous activities and events throughout the year in both Port Fairy and nearby Warrnambool - Including the well known Port Fairy Folk Festival... boat trips, beach walks, golf, shopping, restaurants and great food!

Extremely comfortable, spacious, and well appointed, with everything you need and a warm and friendly host (who kept a respectful distance). A house for artists, photography buffs, and book lovers. Tower Hill is a magic site!
Wonderfully relaxing and restful time in a beautifully appointed house with a view to the ocean from the lounge room and another out over Tower Hill lake from the garden.
We really enjoyed our stay at Tower Hill House. The house is a beautiful old farmhouse which is large and open and has a great aspect overlooking the ocean in the distance. It has big verandahs, it had an enclosed area for our dog and the beds were large and comfortable. It was very well equipped and clean and Richard was very helpful and quick with communication.
The Tower House was excellent. Spacious and warm with great views. Richard the host was very welcoming and gave us some excellent ideas for activities in the coming days. We loved staying there. Our small dog had fun with all the new wildlife smells and noises.
Richard was great, contacting me days in advance of our stay, to give me instructions for getting to the house; he also very kindly provided some local beach visit and restaurant recommendations. Killarney Beach is just a 10min drive and Port Fairy 15min. The house itself is a beautiful piece of history, being a 110 year old home! The house is also very close to the fascinating Tower Hill precinct, with some great trails down in the crater of the extinct volcano.
The house was spacious, comfortable and clean with everything we needed. Located in a convenient position about halfway between Warrnambool and Port Fairy. Also very good for our pooch as the back deck can be closed off with a gate to prevent your pet running off. We were made very welcome by Richard on arrival who gave us lots of good local info re things to see, places to eat and walks to do. A great base for an enjoyable and relaxing holiday!
The property was very clean on arrival, and the rooms were spacious, with a great country kitchen. We had superb views of the ocean in the living room! Our labrador dog had a great outside fenced space to play while we were out sight seeing. We ventured into the nature reserve that sits behind the property. Fantastic views of Tower Hill lakes, at sunset we had friendly encounters with kangaroos, rabbits, foxes and many bird species. Our host Richard was very kind and provided much useful local information to make the most of our 5 night stay. Would definitely recommend this superb country escape!
Gorgeous relaxing house in a truly gorgeous place.
The house is lovely and comfortable and the slow combustion heater really kept us warm and relaxed. The kitchen is fabulous with everything we needed. We did a lot of cooking, eating and drinking wine.
The views are absolutely gorgeous and walking over the back fence to the crater is breathtaking. So close to Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Koroit so easy to get anything you need. Also very close to a beautiful beach which, as Richard the host says, if you see one person, it’s a busy day.
We went on a Worn Gundidj tour of Tower Hill which I highly recommend. Our guide Brett was warm, friendly and knowledgeable about the volcano and the surrounds and it was a privilege to get a First Nations perspective on the history.
We didn’t see or hear much of Richard while we were there, but had some great chats with him on the phone. Knows the area like the back of his hand and is very happy to share tips, particularly good eateries, beach directions, shops etc etc.
Loved our time here. Thanks Richard!
Tower Tree House was absolutely beautiful. The views are spectacular especially when your from the city and need a complete relaxing getaway
Richard was fantastic and made us feel so welcome including our two furbabies, who also had the best time with so much land to run free. We Will be back .
We loved staying here. Richard was very welcoming and ensured we had everything we needed (firewood, coffee, oil, etc). I especially loved the secure sheltered lock-up area for the dogs. The location is brilliant - so close to the beach, Port Fairy and Warrnambool.
What a beautiful and cozy place!
We had an absolutely lovely time staying here! Everything was perfect! The fireplace was wonderful and the home was well equipped with everything we could possibly need. The coffee machine was an added bonus.
Wonderful bed, pillows and towels and the hairdryer was a bonus as I accidentally left mine at our last stop in Broken Hill!
Thanks for a great stay in a beautiful part of the world.
Richard was a very welcoming host and shared his life experience of living in the area through a MIFF documentary which made it a very real and personal experience. The added bonus was the magic of Tower Hill reserve and views of the ocean in a serene setting . Ros.
We really enjoyed our stay at Tower Hill House. It is such a lovely, cosy place to stay. We stayed in the middle of winter and the wood heater did a fabulous job keeping the house lovely and warm all day and night. The bed was really comfy.
The views of the ocean from the lounge room windows are spectacular. We also had kangaroos and emus wander past while we were taking in the scenery.
We took our labradors with us. The house is set up with a secure yard at the back so we could safely leave them if we needed to.
The kitchen was nicely set up and Richard, the host, provided all the basics, such as oil, salt and pepper, cooking utensils etc so you can go straight in and cook.
This house was comfy, cosy and in a really special country location on the side of Tower Hill. It is 15 minute drive one way to Warrnambool and 15 minute drive the other way to Port Fairy.
A 5 minute drive to Killarney Beach, which was so easily accessible and such a lovely beach to walk on with the dogs.
We really enjoyed the photography and artwork that decorates the walls.
I highly recommend Tower Hill House. We hope to visit again soon.
The bed was very comfortable, the kitchen easy to navigate and the views incredible. An easy to use wood heater (but there are wall heaters too) was very cosy and inviting. Richard is an affable host and great story teller!
A pair of emus grazed in the small paddock in front of the house and at night a mob of roos was in another. Walking out the back gate led along part of the Tower Hill crater to meet with roos and wallabies close-up. The downside of this fabulous location is you need to drive to get to the beach and shops but we found it was lovely to be away from crowds.
Tower Hill House is in a great spot for a peaceful time away. Beautiful views of landscape and sunsets. Visits from emus, roos, birds. Cozy house, excellent kitchen, secure yard for our little pooches. Thank you, we loved it.
Tower Hill House was lovely! We had such a great time we can’t wait to go back! There was so much natural beauty and the wildlife was amazing - we’ve never stayed anywhere before that had wild kangaroos and emus walking, or jumping, past us! Highly recommend!
