This large ski resort, just a short drive from Banff, caters to snow-sport enthusiasts of all abilities.

Sunshine Village's long ski season runs from early November to the end of May. This, along with its 12 lifts, more than 100 runs, and 1,335 hectares of slopes, makes it a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders. Its many scenic trails are ideal for hikers during the summer months.

Sunshine Village, one of three ski resorts in Banff National Park, has ski hire facilities, shops and nine different restaurants. However, it has just one hotel, as most visitors drive the 15 minutes from Banff or 90 minutes from Calgary. Those without cars can catch one of the buses that depart regularly every day from these nearby towns.

The resort's three mountains, Mount Standish, Lookout Mountain and Goat's Eye Mountain, are high enough to ensure that there's dry powder all season. In fact, the range's highest point is a soaring 2,730 metres. As a result, Sunshine Village gets 9 metres of snow in an average year.

The resort has excellent off-piste areas if you're an experienced skier, hire a guide and head off in search of some pristine powder. Sunshine Village's extensive network of clearly-marked runs means that there's something to suit all skiers and snowboarders, whether you're a complete beginner, looking to improve, or practically a pro. At each lift there's a map to help you find the right run for you.

Buy your day or season lift pass in Calgary, Banff or Sunshine Village itself, or simply purchase it over the internet. Lifts are open every day of the week during the season and lessons can be booked on the day or in advance.

If you're here in the summer, join one of the daily organised walking tours. Or simply choose a hiking trail to match your ability and explore the mountains, which, at this time of the year, are carpeted in wildflowers.
