Try the saucy Swabian food, visit historic buildings and museums and amble along woodland trails in the large gardens of this Stuttgart suburb.

Gardens and extensive parkland cover the leafy community of Plieningen. The municipality has a friendly and youthful atmosphere, characterised by the University of Hohenheim and its scenic grounds. Learn about the area’s rich history via the array of museums and medieval churches.

The core of this suburb is adorned with the floral displays and ponds of the Exotic Garden. Meander through its forest containing more than 270 tree species. Embark on the Historical Path to encounter the Römisches Wirtshaus and the Spielhaus, which is an old playhouse with a museum.

A little east, find the colourful floral displays of the Botanical Garden. Stroll along the tree-lined esplanades and learn about the history of horticulture. Try the local Swabian food in one of the restaurants adorning the parks. The cuisine consists of mostly soup and saucy pasta dishes.

Reach the region’s crowning jewel, the Schloss Hohenheim, at the northern end of the gardens. This 18th-century manor estate has a rococo style and is currently in use by the university. At the Welcome Centre join a tour of the castle and gardens.

The university also offers tours of some of Plieningen’s other attractions, including the German Agricultural Museum, the Zoological and Veterinary Museum and the Museum of Hohenheim History.

Venture south to find the 12th-century Martinskirche, the oldest church in Stuttgart. Gaze up at its central tower and admire the stylish clock face. Inspect the displays in the museum of the barn-like Monchhof that once served as the town hall.

The area contains the Stuttgart Airport on the southern outskirts of Stuttgart. Drive south from the city centre for 7 miles (11 kilometres) to get here in about 20 minutes. You can also ride a bus or the U3 train to Plieningen and get around on foot.

Plieningen is a university area with picturesque gardens, intriguing museums and historic buildings.
