This busy multilevel square offers live theatre, free cultural events, architectural appreciation and excellent people-watching.

In the centre of Stockholm you’ll find a public square with two open levels and plenty of activity on each floor. Surrounding Sergels Torg, named after sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel, are some of Stockholm’s most notable buildings. Enjoy modern theatre shows, street performers and other free cultural events in the area where Sergel lived and worked over 300 years ago.

At the top level, walk around Kristallvertikalccent during the day to appreciate the domination that this tall glass obelisk has over the square. It is 37 metres (123 feet) tall and was sculpted by Swedish artist Edvin Öhrström in 1974. At night the statue and fountain are lit, creating a delightful play of sounds and reflections across the square.

One floor down, find the pedestrianised area with its striking geometric floor pattern. This part of the square is popular for casual get-togethers and street artist performances. Do a bit of people-watching to observe how Swedish people interact. Visit the underground shopping areas as well.

Each August Stockholm Culture Festival brings free live music and dance shows to the lower level of Sergels Torg. During December visit the square’s Christmas market, open daily. Shop for gifts or enjoy glögg, candies and other Swedish treats.

Kulturehuset, a cultural centre on the south side of the square, has seven levels of art galleries, design shops, workshops, a children’s library and dining and drinking establishments. Have a meal and then go to a live performance at one of the several stages of Stockholms Stadsteater. To the north you’ll see the Hötorget buildings. These five towers were built in the 1950s to symbolise the city’s modernist architecture.

Sergels Torg is at the heart of Stockholm, a short walk from King’s Garden and Gamla Stan, with bus and tram stops nearby. Sveavägen runs north from the square connecting it to Hagaparken. Walk up this busy street to get a sense of the daily activities of this part of the city. Go to the official websites for the cultural centre, the theatre and Stockholm Culture Festival to find information about event and opening times and prices.
