"A very welcoming greeting upon arrival. The room was lovely and clean with plenty of storage space. The breakfast was very good and certainly set you up for the day. I didn’t eat in the pub for an evening meal, but it was a very quaint country pub, full of atmosphere. The menu choices looked very good, and if the breakfast was anything to go by I’m sure the meals would be very good too. Highly recommend the old inn."

"The inn is a stone’s throw from the beach with sea views from my bedroom and the dining terrace, situated on the busy market square. Ideal for swimming from the sheltered beach. The staff were all very hard working, attentive and kind - nothing was too much trouble to make you feel welcome. The bedroom was snug, furnished in a rustic style, but the bed was very comfortable, the wet room functioned well. The stairs off the street to the bedrooms were a bit shabby and scuffed. "We treated ourselves to a little bit more luxury than we usually would as we were staying in Exeter for two days of motorcycle training. Having ridden down from South Wales, the hotel was a real treat to stay at. The room was clean and well equipped, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and for two motorcycles, parking was no issue at all. The outdoor pool was heated and absolutely wonderful. I love open water swimming, so this was right up my street, with the bonus of a jacuzzi in the enclosed part of the pool.
The quilt and pillows were feather, which I'm not a fan of, so I requested non-feather pillows, which were brought to the room within moments. Great service, but the pillows were rubbish. However, I like a firm, substantial pillow, so that's simply a personal choice; I can't fault the hotel for providing what I asked for.
The breakfast was excellent, and the choice of whiskies and tequilas in the bar was very good.
Having never been to Exeter before, I'd definitely go back. The cathedral is beautiful, the local walks through the historic town are gorgeous, and we found an amazing Moroccan restaurant nearby, El Farida, which, for me as a vegetarian, had a great choice"
"The hotel was situated in a lovely location, and our room had a wonderful view overlooking the golf course. The room itself was clean, and I had no issues with it at all. The pool and sauna were also clean, and I really enjoyed using these facilities.
However, breakfast was a major disappointment. The plates and mugs were not properly clean, which was off-putting. The pastries ran out and were not replenished, and there was no fresh fruit available apart from a mixed fruit salad served in a dirty cup.
Overall, the hotel has some great features, particularly its location, views, and leisure facilities, but the breakfast experience needs significant improvement."
"Lovely hotel, conveniently located just off the M5, yet very accessible to reach the city centre by bus. Ample parking, which was also reasonably priced. The staff were super helpful giving us directions to get to the bus stop (just across the road) and which numbers we needed to look out for to reach the city centre. Breakfast was lovely, with a huge variety of food. The lift was a bit slow so we ended up using the stairs instead as we were on the first floor. Modern and super clean look. We will definitely stay there again as it was excellent value for money."
"Lovely short stay in this modern, innovative and eco- friendly hotel. Exceptionally friendly and helpful, polite staff, clean and modern rooms. Loved our stay and will be back again."
"Great stay here at this exceptionally well located hotel / Pub in Exeter. Friendly staff great pub and lovely food.
Will absolutely return next time we are over in Exeter"
"We stayed for one night and unfortunately were quite disappointed with our experience.
The air conditioning in our room was not working, which made it extremely hot and uncomfortable, especially as there were no windows that could be opened for ventilation.
The bar staff were also very unhelpful. They seemed reluctant to serve customers and repeatedly told us they had run out of ingredients for mocktails. The overall service felt poor and unwelcoming.
To top it off, I ordered a cappuccino, and it was honestly one of the worst coffees I have ever had.
Overall, this was not the standard I would expect from a Marriott hotel."
"We absolutely loved our stay at the Royal Lion. Perfect location, lovely room and great service. Breakfast was a nice experience with plenty of choice. Sharon on reception was really helpful and made check-in and out an easy, seamless experience."
