The best area to stay in Saxonia is Dresden, particularly its Altstadt (Old Town) and Innere Neustadt (Inner New Town) districts.

The Altstadt is the historic heart of Dresden, located on the south bank of the Elbe River. It's home to iconic landmarks such as the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger Palace, and the Residenzschloss (Royal Palace). The area is very walkable, with most major attractions within a short stroll of each other, making it great for exploring on foot.

Couples often find the Altstadt particularly appealing. Staying here means you're just steps away from world-class museums, opera at the Semperoper, and romantic evening walks along the Brühl's Terrace, often called "The Balcony of Europe," offering splendid views of the river.

The Innere Neustadt, located directly across the Elbe River from the Altstadt, offers a different yet equally appealing experience. It's known for its Baroque quarter, with beautifully restored buildings, independent boutiques, and a wide array of excellent restaurants and cafes. The Königstraße, a grand boulevard, runs through its centre.

For those who enjoy a blend of historic elegance and contemporary comforts, the Innere Neustadt is an excellent choice.

The best time to go to Saxonia depends on what you're hoping to experience, but generally, the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months offer the most pleasant weather for sightseeing.

During spring, the landscape comes alive, especially in areas like Saxon Switzerland National Park, where the sandstone formations and forests are particularly beautiful. Temperatures are mild, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling without the intense heat of summer or the chill of winter. This is a great time for couples who enjoy exploring nature and picturesque towns without large crowds.

Autumn brings comfortable temperatures and stunning colourful foliage, particularly in the vineyards along the Elbe River Wine Route. This period is superb for those interested in wine tasting and cultural events, as many wine festivals occur. For solo travellers, the quieter atmosphere and pleasant weather make it easy to visit historical cities like Dresden and Leipzig, exploring their museums and galleries at a relaxed pace.

While summer (July and August) is popular for its warmth and longer daylight hours, it can also be the busiest and most expensive time, especially in major cities.
