Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas Tours and Activities

Wander the serene grounds of this church complex, see altars to the Virgin Mary flanked by Baroque architecture and gaze upon a sacred 17th-century painting.

Experience the spiritual heritage and tranquil atmosphere of the Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas, an 18th-century church. This complex, which sits at Lima's heart, is a peaceful space in a district populated by noisy vendors and street performers. Walk the path that has been well-trodden by pilgrims who come to see the Lord of Miracles, a 17th century painting by an Angolan slave.

Built in 1771, the sanctuary stands as a tribute to the Señor de los Milagros (Lord of Miracles), Lima's patron saint.

Admire its Baroque architecture, which is highlighted by golden columns and elaborate decorations. Inside, an oil painting of Jesus on the cross hangs on a humble mud-brick wall. This renowned work was painted almost 400 years ago by a slave from Angola. Devotees from around the world visit to pay their respects to this curious spectacle. Its legendary status comes from a story that it was one of the only surviving items of an earthquake that destroyed much of Lima.

Wander the church and stop by altars dedicated to the Virgin and Jesus. The church space is rounded by a domed roof. Visit in October to smell burning purple incense, which marks the procession of the Lord of Miracles.

Near the sanctuary, Jirón Huancavelica is a hive of activity. Pass decorated buildings along this lively boulevard, barter with vendors selling religious souvenirs or have the future predicted at a tarot stall. Sweet Peruvian deserts are sold by small shops along the street.

The church is dedicated to who is the patron of Lima. It was built in 1771. It opens its doors to the public at dawn until noon, then again from the afternoon until the evening.

Find the Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas in Lima's Tacna district, just west of the city centre. Walk there from Plaza Mayor, the city's historic hub, or catch a bus to the Castilla stop. Alternatively, catch the metro to the Monserrate Railway Station.
