San Cristóbal de las Casas is characterised by its beautiful pastel-colored colonial architecture. Be transported to a different era as you wander along cobbled streets lined with grand buildings that date back to the Spanish conquest of Chiapas. Mayan cultural influence is also evident. The city is a wonderful place to meet indigenous people from the surrounding highlands, buy traditional crafts and learn more about centuries-old local customs.
Start your explorations in the Central Zone or Historic Area in the heart of the city. The leafy Plaza 31 de Marzo makes a good starting point. Near the square you will find some of the most impressive colonial buildings. These include the vivid yellow Cathedral of Saint Christopher and Los Portales.

Nestled in the highlands of Chiapas, San Cristóbal de las Casas is beautifully picturesque. The abundant nature just beyond the city offers a variety of daytrips, from visiting traditional Tzotzil and Tzeltal villages to exploring wild national parks. The closest airport, Ángel Albino Corzo International, is about a 1-hour drive away. Consider long-distance buses from towns and cities including Cancún and Oaxaca too. The best way to get around the town is on foot. You will also find taxis, combis (collective minibuses) and bicycles to rent.
