we had booked a room based on the website photos; the marketing should be honest enough to point out that if you wish to have one of the rooms on the website you will need to pay extra

Only two choices in this beautiful town.
For wine people, Saint-Seine-l'Abbaye is a beautiful place to stop between Champagne and Burgundy. BYOB! It is a bit out of the way despite being on the way, but the wife adores this tiny town tucked in a little valley among rolling hills. There are two hotels next to each other and this one is a bit better. On a scale of 1-100 it’s a 35 and the other is a 34. RUSTIC is the word to consider. The rooms are old and nothing is modern except, perhaps, the espresso machine in the restaurant. The restaurant was embarrassingly bad. The chef may have Alzheimer’s, because the food was just cooked in such a way that said forgetful (I can’t believe “lazy” for a French chef). Lardons on the salad: Burnt on one side, raw on the other. Braised leek that was crispy black burnt on one side and fine on the other. Pan roasted quail that was closer to poached quail. I will say that the Crème brûlée avec Pain d'épices was outstanding, but too little, too late. The fresh trout is taken from a fountain in the courtyard, although we were in the mood for red wine, so trout never got to our table.
