About this property
Urban Tramping Hut - Architect Cabin, Outdoor Bath
Summary:
The Urban Tramping Hut is an architect-designed one-bedroom cabin tucked into a leafy Owhata garden, five minutes from central Rotorua and the Whakarewarewa Redwoods. Designer Mary Campbell built it as a labour of design love - locally sourced Macrocarpa timber inside and out, a mural by award-winning Rotorua artist Mark Noble, and a freestanding outdoor bath set against vertical timber slats and native bush. Wake to bird song; soak under the stars. A distinctive stay for two.
The Space:
Compact but considered, the hut sleeps two adults in a queen bed in the master bedroom, with a small loft mezzanine accessed by ladder for a child (please assess loft safety for your child). A sliding timber door separates the bedroom from the open-plan living, kitchen and dining area. The bathroom sits below the loft and houses the shower, toilet and laundry area.
Outside, the deck and gardens wrap the hut on multiple sides, with the showpiece freestanding outdoor bath positioned for privacy and night-sky views. Macrocarpa boards line both the interior and exterior - warm to the eye and locally sourced. Cooling is by cross-ventilation through the large sliding door and picture window - there is no air conditioning, but the deep eaves, timber construction and bush surrounds keep the space comfortable through most of the year. An indoor pellet fireplace and electric heating warm the cabin in cooler months.
By design, there's no television - the hut was built to live up to its name as a place to unplug, read by the fire, soak in the outdoor bath and listen to the birdsong. Wifi is available if you need to stay connected.
Guest Access:
You have the whole hut to yourself, plus the surrounding garden. Free off-street parking on site. A small tin shed with padlock is available if you'd like to lock away bikes - handy for guests cycling the Redwoods trails. Self check-in via key safe from 3 pm.
The Neighborhood:
The Urban Tramping Hut sits in Owhata, a quiet residential suburb on the eastern edge of Rotorua. The Whakarewarewa Redwoods Forest entrance is a five-minute drive (or a short cycle) - bring or hire mountain bikes for one of New Zealand's best trail networks. Central Rotorua, Eat Streat dining, the lakefront and the geothermal attractions are all within a five-to-ten-minute drive. Tikitapu (Blue Lake) and Rotokakahi (Green Lake) are around 10 minutes away.
Getting Around:
A car is the most practical way to get around Rotorua and parking is free almost everywhere. The hut has off-street parking on site. Cyclists can ride to the Whakarewarewa Redwoods in around five minutes. Local taxi and rideshare services are available, and Rotorua Airport is around 12 minutes by car.
Interaction with Guests:
We're a Rotorua-based team and we're available by phone, message or email throughout your stay. If you'd like a recommendation, need help finding something, or have an issue, we'll respond quickly during business hours and can call by in person if it helps.
