About this property

Ross-on-Wye Stone Cottage | Fishing | Sleeps 4

  • Summary:

A characterful stone cottage tucked away on the outskirts of Ross-on-Wye, set within beautifully kept grounds, with a full mile of private River Wye fishing reached through the fields for anglers. Perfect for fishing breaks, weekend retreats and anyone who wants to properly switch off in one of England's most picturesque river valleys. Sleeps 4 across 2 bedrooms.

    The Space:

Step inside and you'll find a cottage that looks like it belongs to the countryside and feels like a proper home. The exterior is all original stone — thick walls, dormer windows, climbing roses — but inside it's been finished to a modern standard so you've got everything you need without sacrificing any of the charm.

Sweeping lawns, mature trees and hedgerows frame the property on all sides. Anglers can reach the fishery through the fields. The Wye is one of England's finest rivers for coarse fishing, and the main reason most guests come here.

    - 2 bedrooms — 1 double, 1 twin

    - Sleeps 4

    - 1 full bathroom

    - Fully equipped kitchen

    - Comfortable living area

    - Private rear garden

    - Shared estate grounds

    - Fishery access through the fields for anglers

    - Private parking

    - Fast Wi-Fi

    - No pets

Important access note: river access down through the fields to the fishery is strictly for guests who are fishing. It is not open to other guests.

PRIVATE RIVER FISHING — THE HIGHLIGHT

The landlord owns Wye Lea Fishery — a full mile of private fishing rights along the bank of the River Wye, reached directly from the cottage through the fields. It's a special stretch of water, particularly around the Backney Bridge pillars, where the old stone railway structures create an aerated current that draws fish and makes for exceptional sport.

The Wye is particularly famous for its barbel. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting into fishing, this kind of private access is increasingly rare on the river.

A few things to know before you cast:

    - A valid coarse fishing rod licence is required — buy one from the Environment Agency website before you arrive.

    - Please contact us in advance if you're planning to fish so we can confirm availability — a maximum of 15 people can fish the stretch on any given day.

    - There is a day ticket charge for the fishery, which we'll confirm when you get in touch.

    - Staying 3 nights or more? You'll receive 50% off the day ticket charge.

    THE LOCATION

The cottage sits just outside the market town of Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire — a beautiful part of England that doesn't get half the attention it deserves. Rolling hills, the horseshoe bends of the Wye, ancient woodland and a charming town centre are all within a few minutes' drive.

    Things to do nearby:

    - Hereford — home to Hereford Cathedral and the Mappa Mundi, the largest medieval map still known to exist

    - Ledbury — a beautiful historic town with a black and white timber Market House and independent shops

    - Goodrich Castle — one of England's best preserved medieval castles, perched above the River Wye

    - Symonds Yat — one of the most dramatic river viewpoints in the country, with canoe and kayak hire below

    - Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo — great for a family afternoon, with butterflies, a maze and miniature golf

    - King Arthur's Cave — a woodland walk through ancient caves above the Wye Valley

    - Biblins Suspension Bridge — a rope bridge over the River Wye in the Forest of Dean

    - Hay-on-Wye — the famous book town and home of the Hay Festival

    - Forest of Dean — cycling and walking trails through ancient forest

    - Ross-on-Wye town centre: ~5 mins

    - Goodrich Castle: ~10 mins

    - Symonds Yat: ~10 mins

    - Hereford: ~20 mins

    WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK

    - The Riverside Inn — great people watching from the café overlooking the River Wye, and a fantastic restaurant. Monday is steak night, and the weekend cabin does great bacon butties.

    - King's Head Inn — an independently owned historic inn in the town centre with its own microbrewery and classic fish and chips. The Corn Exchange at the back hosts regular live music and events.

    - Avellinos — a very popular, authentic Italian restaurant in the heart of Ross.

    - Plates and Shakers — Greek food in a relaxed, casual setting, and a great spot for evening cocktails.

    - Number Three — one of Ross-on-Wye's best restaurants for quality food and atmosphere.

A car is recommended for making the most of the area — the countryside around Ross-on-Wye is best explored at your own pace and many of the best spots aren't on public transport routes. Taxis are available from Ross-on-Wye town centre if needed.
