Museums, restaurants and a fresh food market fill the Old Port Québec, once a hub for shipping and immigration.

Old Port Québec has been a busy hub since the 19th century. Then it was for ship building, when timber was sent here, stored and then sent away again as a vessel. Today it’s tourists and locals who frequent the historic port. Lining the river are beautiful old buildings filled with restaurants and a regular market selling locally sourced produce.

Explore the wharves and imagine what life was like here 200 years ago. Settlers arrived via the St. Lawrence River and were sent to the old Customs House. The attractive two-storey building still stands now.

Move away from the river promenade and a few streets inland to the Gare du Palais. This amazing transport hub looks like a castle, with turrets and arches outside and soaring ceilings inside.

The Old Port of Québec Interpretation Centre is a hands-on exhibition about shipbuilding and lumber trade at the port. Actors dressed in period costumes and interactive presentations are a fun way to learn about the past. Climb to the observation platform for panoramic views. Look for landmark buildings in the Old City, across the St. Lawrence River and up at the Laurentian Mountains.

Visit the Naval Museum of Québec to learn about the role of the St. Lawrence River, both during wars and times of peace. Marine artefacts, paintings, historic photographs and models of ancient vessels are on display.

The produce market has fruit, vegetables and flowers, all grown locally. Maple-based products are a Canadian specialty and there are plenty to choose from. Try maple-flavoured popcorn, maple butter and high quality maple syrup. Buy cheese and breads and have lunch in the designated picnic area. Find opening hours and stall details on the Old Port Market (Marché du Vieux-Port) website.

Browse through antique shops on the Rue Saint-Paul, a street lined with galleries, cafés and good quality second-hand stores.

Reach the Old Port Québec by train or bus to the Gare du Palais. If you’re already in the centre of town, it’s an easy walk from the Place-Royale and Petit-Champlain. Drivers will find parking available for a fee along the river.
