About this property
A Spacious 18th‑Century Townhouse with Roof Terrace & Mountain Views—Sleeps 10
Welcome to your holiday home in the heart of Prades: a generous, light‑filled five‑bedroom, five‑bathroom townhouse set over four elegant levels, just steps from the cafés, market square and boulangeries of this vibrant Catalan town.
This is not a standard holiday rental. It is a 300‑year‑old bel étage maison de maître, restored with care and furnished with character, offering the rare combination of historic charm, modern comfort, and exceptional space — all within a quiet, walkable location.
Why Guests Love This House: * Five beautifully arranged bedrooms, each with its own bathroom or WC * A spectacular roof terrace with panoramic views of Mount Canigou * Air‑conditioning in the four upper bedrooms for cool summer nights * A newly fitted, fully equipped kitchen designed for real cooking * Two outdoor spaces — the sunny terrace and a shaded courtyard * Large, flexible living areas perfect for families and groups * A peaceful street just two minutes from the main square
Whether you’re gathering for a family celebration, travelling with friends, or bringing multiple generations together, the house offers the space, privacy and comfort that make holidays effortless.
Space to Enjoy, Space to Breathe: The bel étage sitting room, with its tall windows and original features, is a calm place to unwind. The dining room seats everyone comfortably, and the dayroom opens onto the courtyard — ideal for morning coffee or a quiet read.
Upstairs, the bedrooms are arranged across two floors, each with their own bathroom, giving every guest a sense of privacy. The top floor opens onto the roof terrace, where you can dine under the stars, watch the swifts circle at dusk, or simply enjoy the changing colours of Canigou.
In the Heart of Prades. Step outside and you’re moments from: * The famous Tuesday market * Restaurants, cafés and wine bars * Bakeries, shops and the riverside * The train station (including the Petit Train Jaune)
Beaches, lakes, abbeys, hot springs, mountain walks and medieval villages are all within easy reach.
Perfect for Larger Groups: The house sleeps up to 12 guests in comfort, with enough bathrooms, seating, and outdoor space for everyone. It’s ideal for:
* Two or three families travelling together * Multi‑generational holidays * Walking, cycling or cultural groups * Longer stays and remote working
A Home with Soul: Guests often tell us the house feels warm, generous and full of character — a place with history, personality and a sense of welcome. We think you’ll feel the same.
We have owned the house for over twenty years. Over that time we have substantially upgraded the property, No two walls are at right angles, so modernising the interior was a challenge. What we haven’t done is change the character of the house. What we have done is provide modern facilities, make it really comfortable and give you a great base for your holiday.
We have had some big parties of friends and family here - the house takes 10-12 but we have also been really comfy as a couple too. The bedrooms provide flexible sleeping accommodation with 7 beds (plus 1 pull-out bed and a sofa-bed). There are three modern en-suite shower rooms; a new, downstairs dayroom/bedroom looking onto the private courtyard with WC, and an additional separate bathroom with WC. On the first floor there is a good size dining room and sitting room. The house has a private courtyard and a large, south-facing roof terrace.
The Area: Prades is a pretty French market town of about 4000 people. The big and colourful market is on Tuesday mornings. The Romanesque church has the largest baroque Reredos in France. There are cafes, brasseries and restaurants as well as a good range of shops all around the town square. There are events and festivals throughout the year. From Carcassonne to the Vermillion coast the Rousillion is packed with interest. Notable vineyards include Limoux, Rivesaltes and Banyuls. Catalonia has been part of the Kingdom of Majorca, Aragon, France and Spain. Its history is visible in the fortified towns, coastal watchtowers and castles throughout the area. Prades is a centre of French Catalan heritage and culture. Spanish cellist Pablo Casals fled to Prades during the Spanish civil war, stayed and established the festival that now bears his name. The Catalan summer school takes over the town for two weeks in August, and there is dancing in the square every night. Local food is influenced too.
Things to do: There is so much to do in the region that all we can do is give you a taste. There are impressive hills, lakes and rivers around Prades with a wide variety sports and activities. In winter the nearest ski resorts are just 45km away. Canet Plage is 30 minutes drive from the house. It has long, sandy Mediterranean beaches, restaurants and lively nightlife. You can get to Canet by public transport. There is a variety of other beaches and coastal resorts close by including Sainte-Marie-Plage, Saint-Cyprien-Plage, Port Barcares, Argeles-sur-Mer and the pretty fishing town of Colluire. The Petit Train Jaune, the most scenic SNCF service, climbs 1200m up the Tet valley from the walled town of Villefranche via some spectacular viaducts. There are pretty towns and villages, castles, abbeys and lots of museums in the Conflent. Prades has an excellent, English speaking tourist office to help you plan your trips. Many of our guests keep coming back because there is so much to do and see.
Eating Out: As you would expect, good restaurants are plentiful and you will be hard pressed to eat badly. The set menus are good value and a way to sample local specialties. Try Escalivade-roast vegetable salad, Bourride-delicious fish soup, anything with anchovies, Paella, Boules de Picolat-Catalonian meatballs, and Crepes Forestiere-wild mushroom pancakes. The ice-cream liegeois are excellent and Creme Catalane is the local dessert. The local wine, best ordered by the pichet, is excellent and cheap. The vin rose goes well with virtually everything. Other drinks popular with the locals are Banyuls and Rivesaltes as aperitifs and dessert wines, Kir, Sangria, and demi-peche lager with peach syrup.

A delightful house a hop away from the main square
The house comfortable and interesting contained everything we needed - every bedroom had en suite shower
The roof terrace and courtyard superb extras
Prades is well connected by public transport -we enjoyed 2 weeks without a car
Will definitely be back
And many thanks to Pascale who met us and was on hand for any problems-there were none!
It is a wonderfully charismatic house and feels like a happy family home. Its far from your usual IKEA identikit Air B&B rental and so much the better for it. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking at home. There's lots of space to relax. It has the most wonderful terrace looking out to Mount Canigou, perfect for eating, drinking and relaxing. Everything in Prades is pretty much in walking distance.
We found the double bed in the master bedroom small, but it was such a beautiful room to sleep in we didn't move to one of the many other bedrooms. We had beautiful September weather. A really special weeks holiday. We'd love to go back.
We had a wonderful stay. The house is very charming - full of spirit and soul. Tastefully furnished and equipped with everything you could need or desire (o.k., the Mini TV we didn't check out) - our daughter loved the popcorn machine;-). Situated in the very city center - most convenient. Communication with Deiniol and the Admin was very uncomplicated, we got all useful information and necessary instructions. We had some really hot days during our stay, and the nights especially in the upper floors felt tropical. But this is July in this region, nothing unexpected. We were 9 persons and loved the fact, that each bedroom is equipped with a separate bathroom (no shower jams in the heat). All in all - a very good experience.
We really enjoyed our stay in Deiniol’s house, we loved the space available and the quirky eclectic mix of style and decoration throughout the property. The sitting room is lovely and bright, it would more comfortable with another sofa or couple of armchairs. This is an old town house and has a lot of stairs so not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties.
The kitchen is well equipped.
The bedrooms are roomy and have en suites with great showers.
The view from the terrace of the mountains is stunning. There is a large table and chairs and a BBQ. A choice of a sail cloth for shade or a large umbrella.
Communication with the owner and property manager was excellent, from the initial booking throughout and after our stay via an WhatsApp group. Instructions for parking and finding the property were very clear.
We found the location to be perfect for accessing the facilities in the town and exploring the local area. It is just a short walk to the square there are some excellent bars, cafes and restaurants. the butchers and fishmonger are excellent too. There is a handy Spar in the town and a well stocked Super U. The local markets are definitely worth visiting. We met some interesting local people and felt very welcomed. The staff in the local tourist information office, were helpful with suggestions of things to do and see, we managed to fit them all in and more!
We would definitely recommend staying here and would return.
Very comfortable with lots of space. The roof terrace is brilliant for bird watching. Our 3 year old loved the toys and the road has very little traffic. The Pablo Casals museum at the end of the street is a great introduction to going to a cello festival concert.

Nice and charming house!
We spent three weeks in Prades in July and had a great time. The house is big and charming with a lovely roof terrace. 45 min with car to the sea, but there are lots of things to do in Prades as well: we had lovely walks with the dog by the canal to the monastery, went to the market and had wonderful baths in the river of Tet. Would love to come back!
We really loved our stay in the house in Prades. It's right in the centre of the town in a lovely old street, a couple of minutes walk from the town square, although very quiet at night - a perfect balance! The house was great fun with nice big rooms. The kitchen was very well stocked and we did a lot of cooking. We didn't use the garden as we were there in April and it wasn't that hot, but we spent lots of time on the top floor terrace which has amazing views over the Canigou mountain, watching the swallows, swifts and house martens.
This is a lovely house, in which my wife and I were lucky enough to spend 4 months. The view of the Canigou from the terrace is sublime; the rooms are comfortable and the kitchen is excellent; the location could not be better. If you are considering different places to stay in France, Prades is a great choice, with regional markets twice a week, surrounded by the beauty of the Conflent.
Deiniol is a perfect host -- we never had a problem with communication or any arrangements. I recommend 18 Rue de l'Hospice very highly and hope to return soon.
An excellent experience from start to finish. Really good service from the owner and local manager.
The house is lovely - it's not 'fancy' but that's not what we wanted. The description on Vrbo is very helpful, read it carefully and there will no surprises (or at least, only good ones!) It's in a great location and has everything you need for a great holiday. So much more interesting than some places you could stay. Loads of room to relax and make yourself at home. The roof terrace and the small courtyard are highlights. Prades is a nice little town and there's loads to do in the area. All in all, we were very happy - thank you.
This is such a wonderful house. The roof terrace on the top floor is fantastic and the views are amazing. There is loads of space in the house itself and the kitchen is better equipped than any holiday rental property we’ve stayed in and a really lovely room to hang out in. Prades is a great town to explore the local area as well. The market on Tuesday is a must and the lake at Vinca (10 mins drive away) is great if you have kids and are staying in the summer. We’ll definitely be back.

Very comfortable, stylish house, close to everything
We loved this house so much. It was right in the middle of Prades, but in a quiet street. The bedrooms are full of character and comfortable. We loved the roof terrace with views to Pic du Canigou, where we spent our evenings chatting under the stars. The kitchen was very nice and had everything you need. The sitting room is a romantic place, with the green leaves of the tree in the garden sheltering it from the warm sun.
There is much to see and do in close vicinity of the house. The market on Tuesday is on your doorstep, as is the beautiful village of Eus. We enjoyed climbing the Pic du Canigou! Every day we went to Vinca for an evening swim in the lake. We recommend this beautiful place!

Heerlijk huis met eigen sfeer.
Het huis is prima koel te houden met de luiken dicht, alles is aanwezig, niet chique maar Frans/Engels rommelig en praktisch. Dakterras is ‘s avonds een prachtplek.

Relaxed stay at 18 rue de l'hospice
The house is very comfortable to stay in. The kitchen is well equipped with all you can need for hassle free cooking: fridge, freezer, microwave, diswasher and a new cooker. A nice touch were the already provided essentials.. washing up liquid, dish washer tablets, loo rolls so we didn't have to stock up on large packets of everything. We were a family of four and had a pick of bedrooms. The bathrooms accompanying them were also very good - great showers!
We enjoyed the character of the house. The terrace was a great sun trap and had lovely views, the ritual of closing and opening the shutters felt very french and the floor to ceiling windows that opened inwards meant we caught catches of the french conversations passing by. The children also found it a great place for hide and seek.
The house is the perfect spot for relaxing and getting away from it all - there's no TV, no internet and escapism is easy. (There's quite a few books to borrow if you read more than you expect too!)
There is also plenty of free parking very close to the house.
Prades itself was a good place to be in. The market was great and very friendly with plenty of opportunities to taste before you buy. We particularly recommend the Pyrennean rotisserie chicken. The Bio Co-op had everything I needed for a gluten free diet. The Spar was open at convenient times and was very friendly. The butcher up Rue Arago had good delicatesan dishes to go with the meats on offer. There was a choice of
boulangeries for our morning expeditions for croissants and pain au chocolats. (The town was also reassuringly quiet so I could send our 11 year old off by himself come the end of the week for this purchase.) We also enjoyed going to the patisserie just up from the Spar and choosing a treat which came boxed up tied with a ribbon even if you chose only a single eclair. Also on Rue Arago (just round the corner from the house) was a good pizza take away. Very fresh pizzas enjoyed by all.
We also tried out some of the cafe's for coffee and people watching or after tea for a glass of something and an ice cream for the children. El Rider 66 was particularly welcoming for the children.
The tourist information centre in Prades was surprisingly big for the size of the town. We found lots of things to do, worked out we were close to the train station but in the end were more than happy to stay round Prades and relax.

Cool house, lovely area.
This is am amazing house that goes up and up. We loved the cool shabby chic decor and the view from the roof terrace is amazing. We spent each evening staring at the mountain, watching the swifts zip around catching their supper.
There was lots to do round and about (we have two boys aged 6 and 9) from swimming in the lake at Vinca, visting the pool at Vernet le Bain, relaxing at the hot springs, and there are lots of fantastic walks not to mention caves and forts to visit. We thought we would travel further afield to explore but in reality we stayed pretty local as there was plenty to do.
Would love to go back.
