Flanked by the intricate façades of some of the city’s most iconic buildings, the Piazza Arringo is the main historic hub of Ascoli Piceno. It is thought to have been the central square since the Roman era, continuing to play a key role in medieval times and present day. Visit this spacious rectangular plaza to get to know the principal attractions of the city.

Arrive at the market held on Saturday mornings and chat with the vendors for a glimpse of the local culture. The stalls display a range of clothing and shoes, among other accessories. Relax in one of the charming cafés with tables spilling out into the cobbled square and watch people go by.

Sit on the side of one of the two fountains and listen to the soothing sound of the water falling around bronze sculptures portraying sea horses and other aquatic motifs.

Head to the eastern side of the large piazza to reach the spectacular Cattedrale di Sant’Emidio. Admire the colorful mosaics inside the cathedral and delve into the impressive crypt. The fresco decorating the underside of the central dome is another highlight.

Visit the adjacent 13th-century Palazzo dell’Arengo, which contains artistic and historic exhibits of the Museo Diocesano di Ascoli Piceno and the Pinacoteca Civica. Cross the square to the northern side to view the historical artifacts on display at the Museo Archeologico Statale.
