Gain insight into the life of Portuguese nobility at this privately owned property, known for its exquisite tile panels and pretty gardens.

The Palace of the Marquises, or Fronteira Palace as it’s also known, offers a peaceful escape from the buzz of the city. Take a guided tour around the 17th-century Baroque-style property, which is known for its well-kept gardens and attractive tile panels.

Find out about the history of this stately property. Originally built as a hunting pavilion, the estate remains under private ownership, with visitors allowed to explore the property by guided tour only. The oldest-surviving part of the estate is a chapel, which dates back to the 16th century.

During the tour, examine the many azulejo tiles that feature around the property. These exquisitely detailed tiles are most commonly displayed as part of larger tile panels and can be found all around the property, both inside the palace and in the gardens. View panels depicting biblical scenes, hunting tableaus and even battles. Don’t miss the spectacular Battle Room, whose stunning tile panels are considered among the finest examples of the art form.

The palace is also home to other types of artworks, including several noteworthy paintings. Venture to the dining room to see works by Domingos Antonio de Sequeira, a well-known Portuguese court painter.

Stroll around the palace’s manicured grounds, which cover an area of almost 14 acres (6 hectares). Wander past carefully cut hedges and sculptures, some of which depict former Portuguese rulers. Because it’s a private property and visitor numbers are limited, the gardens are relatively free from crowds, and a calm and tranquil atmosphere pervades.

Find the Palace of the Marquises in the Benficaneighborhood of Lisbon. Access to the palace is by guided tour only, though it is possible to enter the gardens only for a small admission fee. Book tours in advance during the busier summer months to ensure a spot. The palace is about a 15-minute walk from the Jardim Zoológico metro station. Local buses will bring you even closer. The palace and gardens are closed on Sundays.
