The Whale House was simple and perfect. Exactly what we needed, quiet, clean and the host was extremely easy to work with. We will stay here again. You can hear the ocean, the view is beautiful and the kitchen was great for cooking meals. So many state parks down the road on both sides. Love it!

Absolutely Heaven
This little cottage by the sea was just what we wanted. Beautiful early morning wake-up calls from the birds and geckos and the sounds of the waves. Night is especially amazing as the stars are bright. Loved the black sand beach and chatting with locals. Close to everything. Really hope we can visit again soon. Thanks Andre and Susan for a wonderful week.

Loved the whale house, cute little kitchen, lots of beautiful flowers and a walk across the street to Kehena Beach, which we liked more than Pohoiki Beach.

It warms our heart when we get great reviews like this. Yes, Kehena Beach is the most popular black sand beach in Puna, Hawaii. On Sundays you will see a line of cars on both sides of the street as people come from all over to the famous ‘ drum circle’ and static dance festivities. When Monday comes, the place is so peaceful. It’s truly a unique place.

We enjoyed our stay at the Whale House. Though we were across the street from the shore we could see the ocean from the lanai. Everything was clean and comfortable. Although it was a bit of a scramble to get there, the black sand beach was lovely. We would definitely stay there again.

While most guests ( young and senior) really enjoy this beach, there are some folks ( usually disabled in some form) that have trouble w/ the rock stairs so it’s not for everyone. It is however the MOST POPULAR black sand beach on this side of Hawaii.

If you are looking to avoid busy tourist areas and want to experience ‘ real Hawaii’ , this may be the place. It’s across from the ocean where you can hear the waves crashing on the cliffs below. During winter months, you can see and hear whales from this cottage … and that’s why we named it Whale House. 🤟🏽

Quaint chalet
We stayed in one of three chalets/cabins on the property: They are very well situated for exploring the area and right across the road from the black sand Kehena Beach. The owners were very responsive and also assisted with tips on what to do. The hot pools at a beach nearby are worth a visit, as is the newly formed black sand beach in the other direction. There is a very well stocked small grocery store about 5 minutes drive away. Well situated for a visit to the Hawaiian National Volcanoes Park. A beautiful and varied area well worth a stay.

We also would like to say that not only is this a very scenic area w/ lots to see, it is semi remote so if you want to avoid the city - this is the place. Most people have never heard of Kehena Beach so it’s still pretty new on the world map of places to visit. I’m also happy to see that he pointed out the little store near by. Most guests report that there are no stores but unfortunately never looked or asked us.

We love reviews like this but a clarification. There actually is a market, a deli and a Hawaiian bar on our street 3.5 miles away in Kaimu. It’s the Kaimu Corner Store. It’s hidden as there aren’t a lot of signs here 😉

Yes, you can pay $300 just down the street but when you are here, you are about 50 yards from the cliffs , a short walk across the street to the beach and a full kitchen and laundry. You can’t beat the price.

Very uncomfortable sleeper futon.
I was embarrassed to have my friend try to sleep on the living area sleeper futon. The bed was like sleeping on a rubber mattress. Sheets would not stay on. 2nd night she used the comforter from the bedroom for padding but still the sheets would stay on and I was cold without the comforter. Love the little cottage but will never stay there again with another person needing that "bed". Very disappointed since I asked in advance about that bed. It needs a thick mattress pad and seriously fitted sheets.

Response from VrboOwner on 13 Nov 2022
Our apologies as we were out of town and the NEW cleaner apparently placed the wrong sheets in the room even after being instructed what to use. As far as comfort goes, this was the first complaint therefore we didn’t feel it needed an egg crate topper to soften the bed. We also have aerobeds w/ perfectly fitted sheets for those that request them.

What is Not to Love?
There really is nothing but positive comments I can make about the property, the owners, or the location. My only regret is that we didn't plan to stay long enough. The photos are correct; the unit looks fine from the outside, but it is gorgeous inside with everything anyone would need. I have stayed in the area before and know my way around so it was easy to find the rental and navigate around, nevertheless Susan was very thorough with her directions and tips which were great because there is a lot more going on in the area than it seems. Kehena beach was great, easier to get down to the second time. The surf was pretty high so be careful. In summary who could ask for anything more?

Short stay...wonderful kitchen and AC
Long and yhe short of it, great spot for the southeast portion of the island. We stayed for two nights at the Whalehouse at Kehana Beach. Easy instructions, easy check-in and out, clean quiet spot with full kitchen. Having AC was heavenly and Direct TV as well as a Roku TV in the main bedroom. Read the listing so you understand the sleeping situation-queen bed and nice pull-out couch. Also a really nice recliner and you can see and hear the ocean from the main living area and kitchen. Only thing I did not realize, Kehena Beach isn't much if you're looking for a typical large beach to relax on/run on/swim at but the owners provided a ton of information on where to visit and other beaches to snorkel or swim at and other sightseeing opportunities in the area. Nice stay, will probably be back next time we visit the area.

Great location to relax
We got in late after a flight delay and was already notified by the owners to pick up our immediate needs as everything would have been closed. The location was great for us, we enjoyed the nearby black sand beaches and hot ponds. The cottage was perfect for the two of us, clean and well stocked. All locals we talked to were friendly and helpful. We also enjoyed the frogs nightly serenade.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Whale house. The place was clean and inviting with a homey vibe. It was nice to return to after long days of exploring this side of the island. The little beach across the road was interesting and had more traffic during the weekend, but the frogs and pounding surf drowned out most of the activity. Overall we had a great stay and would recommend it, especially for those who want to be off the beaten path. Thanks to our hosts.

Cutie Pie Jungle Bungalow
The cottage was lovely and comfortable. Andre and Susan left us a couple beach towels so we did not have to schlepp from home. After a long flight and having stopped in Hilo for 5 days of groceries we ended up in the dark trying to find our way. We had been to Kapoho many times but not this far south on the highway. Highly recommend getting there before darkness sets in!. So happy to have ice when we arrived because after that 14 hour ordeal to get there we were ready for a cocktail. Thanks you two for the ice! For swimming, my husband opted out of the black sand beach and instead we drove a quick 13 miles to Pahoa to the community pool to swim. Very nice, big pool. For future visitors, Walmart in Hilo can save you a ton of money for staples. They don't have much in the way of fresh fruit, poultry or meat but staples they have. There is a Safeway right behind Walmart for meat/poultry/fish. There was more traffic on the road in front of the cottage than we could have imagined. All we could figure was that since the other road to Kapoho was shut down, a lot of residences must be using 'our' road to get to work - be aware of that if you arrive with little ones because drivers sometimes fly down that road. Only suggestion I have is to provide a step stool somewhere (in one of the lower empty cabinets?) because a shorty like myself has a tough time reaching the glasses in the upper cabs.

This property is exactly as advertised: beautiful, remote, jungle farm. If you don’t like critters, stay in Honolulu, but if you want to be immersed in a rainforest in a fresh fruit farm in a beautiful artsy cottage, this is your spot. The host was so kind and even offered her time to give us a tour, including archeological and geological history. The care for the land and the people of this gorgeous place is evident in everything they do.

The home itself was in an awesome secluded location & was clean & welcoming I would definitely recommend staying here

Kehena Black Sand Beach
The cabin has a great location, just across the street from the black sand beach. It is in a cluster of three homes, but has a nice private porch with a table and chairs. Parking is available behind the house, but access is a bit crowded and it is difficult to turn around there. The house was fine, clean and reasonably equipped with kitchen utensils and utilities. For some reason, there was no hot water during our stay, which we took in a stride but some may find a minus. The owner was really nice. We would rent it out again when we decide to head to the Big Island again.

There is hot water as it is an instant hot water system. One has to wait a minute for the hit water to reach the faucet. Had no other mentions of this from the following guests. As far as turning around. The driveway is not built for turning around. I have a large F150 4 door truck and simply back out of the driveway without any problems.

A nice place with welcoming grounds and a beautiful location
Location could hardly be better. Near beaches, close to road but firmly in the country, among beautiful rainforest, and about an hour or less from many wet side attractions. Radio started spotting and lost cell service (Verizon, Ting) about 10 min away from house. We flew in to Kona airport, got groceries, and drove across the island to this cottage in the dark, which worked but I wouldn't exactly recommend it. Seeing the dense roadside foliage, and vines hanging over the road, for the first time in complete darkness (cloud cover, no stars) was a mite creepy, and the loud chirping (frogs, I later found) put me on edge at first. But I felt so welcome pulling in to their little lot of three cottages, with easy parking on lava rock, and lush (NOT resort-style) tropical plantings all around. It's grown a bit since the pictures were taken, so the grounds were even prettier than anticipated. Settling in was a breeze, though a little "different": the windows were open (screens closed), and the TVs on. Surprisingly, this did not attract tiny flies! We shut the windows the first night to be safe, but left many of them open other nights for the cooler air, which was nice (no A/C needed). Bugs weren't a big problem. I saw tiny ants outside, just once in the kitchen after we SPILLED food (sorry!), and once in the bathroom on the shower-fogged mirror. There were ant traps in strategic locations, and geckoes, Hawaiian garden spiders and frogs outside, which probably helped. I never saw an ant in the cupboards or near our items. There were no cockroaches or other large bugs at all. Given this place is practically on the edge of a jungle, I think that's doing pretty well! Interior décor changed a bit since the pictures were taken; more browns, less pale colors (too bad, IMO). Dust/hair is embedded in some of the paint. Outlet on the lanai was painted over and not usable (there's one around the corner outside if you need it). Didn't like rugs in the muggy weather, but they're movable. Screen door off-track and rusty from steel-aluminum electrolysis (I cleaned it a bit). Cabinet drawers and doors a bit swollen and creaky from marine air. But TBH, that's all nitpicking: this is a casual place to enjoy NATURE! If that is why you're here, I'm sure you'll feel at home. Amenities are good for cooking and laundry. Confused to find no scissors or washcloths, so we bought and left them there (sorry if their lack was intentional). Also left pliers, lighter, and flyswatter.

We stayed here before going to Kaua'i to elope. Great location for Solitude and getting away from the hustle and bustle. If I had to do it again I might have rented this spot for two or three days and then maybe a few days in Kona instead of a week. Mainly because you are 20 minutes from restaurants and stores, but overall not a big deal. Kona is a two-hour drive from this location. But there's tons of fun stuff with in an hour. Right down the street from the lava fields and right across the street from the black sand beach. Host was great with communication. Would you absolutely stay here again!!! The only con is the proximity to the houses around you. If you have the windows open you can hear everyone getting in and out of the cars and it's a little distracting but there are worse things in my life. Mahalo!

The area however is finally being discovered by many because of its natural beauty, black sand beaches, tide pools, warm ponds, proximity to Volcanoes National Park and eruption site in Leilani. Not to mention that it is still affordable down here as it is still < $150 per night.

The Whale House was a quaint little beach house with AC, important because of the humidity. The views of the ocean, and vlack sand beach within walking distance were the best parts of our stay. The place could have been a little cleaner, ie the food crumbs in the pull out drawer under oven was, no baking sheet/pan to speak of, and the pans were not scrubbed out well. Also, the shower curtain in the bathroom was mildewed, and needed replacing or sprayed down in mildew cleaner. Otherwise a nice stay and location.

Whale Cottage was Remarkable
The Whale cottage was the perfect private getaway. While you are situated in a small trio of cottages, the way they are situated allows you complete privacy on the lanai. You have the best of both worlds to enjoy the space and interact with other guests, or not. We loved the beach access across the street to get to the black sand beach, the peace of the forest at night and the coqui frogs singing us to sleep. The cabin itself was well-appointed with everything you may need. It was clean and adequate for a few nights stay and allowed us a great respite from the world. We went to Kona for a few days after our stay at the Whale House and even our resort wasn't as pleasant. We wish we stayed longer instead of heading to Kona. Thanks for the easy access, quick responses and no-contact entry. It was a remarkable place to stay.

Magical little piece of heaven!
On our way there, we drove through a heavy rainforest downpour. A bright chunk of rainbow appeared at the end of the storm, and we literally followed it right to our doorstep! We were greeted at the cottage by Hawaiian music pouring out of a little stereo and Izzy's beautiful rendition of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" just happened to play as soon as we arrived! Magic!! The cabin was immaculately clean, beautifully and comfortably decorated, with gorgeously high ceilings and lovely ceiling fans. We loved spending time on the lanai in the mornings gazing at the ocean, and the evenings, waiting for the little "coqui" tree frogs to begin their nighttime chorus. We visited the beautiful little black-sand, clothing-optional beach across the street: you must have enough agility to climb down a steep little stony path, but it's well worth it! Due to the location of the cabins, the internet is a wee bit of a challenge. There seemed to be numerous routers and passwords and there was some conflicting password and router information provided by the owners. We ended up helping a couple staying one of the other cabins get online with information we found in our cabin which they did not seem to have access to. We couldn't get the TV in the bedroom to connect to any of the routers, but it didn't really matter to us. There is no cell phone reception there (land line phones are thoughtfully provided!) so having that bit of internet access is important for communication, but it's also nice to feel a bit off-grid and more one with nature. <3

Yes, it’s a beautiful spot. Regarding routers. The reality here is that we have two separate internet service providers you almost guarantee internet service. We have 3 routers to provide stronger signal. The passwords are listed on the e- mails and are located in the refrigerator. It’s quite ‘rare’ that someone can’t get online here for one reason or other.
