Location could hardly be better. Near beaches, close to road but firmly in the country, among beautiful rainforest, and about an hour or less from many wet side attractions. Radio started spotting and lost cell service (Verizon, Ting) about 10 min away from house.
We flew in to Kona airport, got groceries, and drove across the island to this cottage in the dark, which worked but I wouldn't exactly recommend it. Seeing the dense roadside foliage, and vines hanging over the road, for the first time in complete darkness (cloud cover, no stars) was a mite creepy, and the loud chirping (frogs, I later found) put me on edge at first. But I felt so welcome pulling in to their little lot of three cottages, with easy parking on lava rock, and lush (NOT resort-style) tropical plantings all around. It's grown a bit since the pictures were taken, so the grounds were even prettier than anticipated.
Settling in was a breeze, though a little "different": the windows were open (screens closed), and the TVs on. Surprisingly, this did not attract tiny flies! We shut the windows the first night to be safe, but left many of them open other nights for the cooler air, which was nice (no A/C needed). Bugs weren't a big problem. I saw tiny ants outside, just once in the kitchen after we SPILLED food (sorry!), and once in the bathroom on the shower-fogged mirror. There were ant traps in strategic locations, and geckoes, Hawaiian garden spiders and frogs outside, which probably helped. I never saw an ant in the cupboards or near our items. There were no cockroaches or other large bugs at all. Given this place is practically on the edge of a jungle, I think that's doing pretty well!
Interior décor changed a bit since the pictures were taken; more browns, less pale colors (too bad, IMO). Dust/hair is embedded in some of the paint. Outlet on the lanai was painted over and not usable (there's one around the corner outside if you need it). Didn't like rugs in the muggy weather, but they're movable. Screen door off-track and rusty from steel-aluminum electrolysis (I cleaned it a bit). Cabinet drawers and doors a bit swollen and creaky from marine air. But TBH, that's all nitpicking: this is a casual place to enjoy NATURE! If that is why you're here, I'm sure you'll feel at home.
Amenities are good for cooking and laundry. Confused to find no scissors or washcloths, so we bought and left them there (sorry if their lack was intentional). Also left pliers, lighter, and flyswatter.
