Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Ohai?
The best area to stay in Ohai is within the small town centre itself, particularly around Clifden Road and the surrounding streets.

This area forms the heart of Ohai, a former mining town. It's a small, close-knit community with a few local shops and services. While not a bustling metropolis, it offers a genuine slice of rural Southland life, with the pace being very relaxed. The main road through town, Clifden Road, is where you'll find the primary amenities.

For travellers looking for a quiet retreat and a base to explore the wider Southland region, Ohai's town centre is an excellent choice. Its unhurried pace makes it ideal for those wanting to escape the rush of city life and enjoy the natural surroundings, such as the nearby rural landscapes and the Ohai Railway Heritage Centre.

Couples seeking a tranquil getaway will appreciate the peacefulness of Ohai. It provides a relaxed environment for reconnecting, with opportunities for gentle walks or drives through the scenic countryside.
When is the best time to go to Ohai?
The best time to go to Ohai, Southland, New Zealand is during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn (November to April).

This period offers the most pleasant weather for exploring the region's natural beauty. You'll find longer daylight hours and generally milder temperatures, which are ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and visiting the local attractions. Many local businesses and tour operators also have extended hours during these months.

For those interested in exploring the surrounding Fiordland National Park or Stewart Island, the summer months (December to February) are particularly good. The weather is at its warmest, making conditions more comfortable for boat trips, walking tracks, and wildlife spotting. It's also when the region is at its most active, with more events and opportunities to engage with local culture.

If you prefer to avoid the peak tourist season but still want good weather, late spring (November) and early autumn (March-April) are excellent choices. The crowds are typically smaller, and the weather is still very agreeable, often with beautiful clear days superb for photography.
