"Totally over priced for the quality received. Paying over 300 eur a night for a “holiday apartment”, one expects more. At minimum better beds than two separate ones for parents + sofa bed for the kids. The parent’s bed had some weird hospital like rubber cover under the linen, making a very uncomfortable sleep. Interior finish and furniture very low cost. Sound insulation bad, we could hear all the noises from the other rooms. Shower’s water pressure low or even non-existing if somebody...

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Oberes Geratal?
The best area to stay in Oberes Geratal is the town of Gehlberg, known for its central location within the Thuringian Forest and its access to outdoor activities.

Gehlberg is a smaller, traditional village surrounded by dense forest, making it a good base for exploring the region. It's situated directly on the Rennsteig, a famous long-distance hiking trail, and offers a selection of guesthouses and holiday flats. The village centre has a few local eateries and shops.

For couples seeking a quiet retreat with plenty of opportunities for hiking and enjoying nature, Gehlberg is an excellent choice. You can easily access numerous walking paths directly from the village, including sections of the historic Rennsteig. The local glassblowing museum also makes for an interesting afternoon activity.

Families will also find Gehlberg appealing due to its relaxed atmosphere and access to outdoor adventures. The surrounding forests offer gentle trails suitable for children, and in winter, there are opportunities for sledging and cross-country skiing.
When is the best time to go to Oberes Geratal?
The best time to visit Oberes Geratal is during the late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities and the natural scenery is at its most appealing.

During late spring, the landscape is lush and green, with wildflowers blooming. Temperatures are mild, making it ideal for hiking and cycling along the numerous trails, such as those found in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park. This period is particularly good for active couples and families who enjoy exploring nature without the intense heat of summer.

Early autumn offers similarly comfortable temperatures and the added beauty of the changing leaves, creating a picturesque backdrop for walks and photography. The air is often crisp and clear, providing excellent visibility for panoramic views from elevated points like the kickelhahn observation tower. This season is great for those seeking a tranquil escape and an appreciation for natural beauty.

While summer (July-August) can also be lovely, it tends to be busier with more visitors, and temperatures can occasionally be quite warm.
